Outlook problem

Had a call from a business client with a virus. They'd removed it themselves but were having problems. Turned out it still had a rootkit. I got rid of it but it had a lot of permissions problems. I reset all permissions but it then had problems with Internet Explorer not allowing certain sites (random sites like bbc.co.uk, not SSL or antivirus related). Also IE options were greyed out. Fixed this by resetting policies. Noticed problems opening microsoft management console "class not registered" error. Fixed that.

All seemed to be working but now Outlook 2007 doesn't open. It does however start and work OK in safe mode. It just freezes before any views are shown, just showing the Outlook Logo. I've tried:

New profile with new PST
PST repair
Removing all addins
Deleting extend.dat & outcmd.dat
Uninstalling the AV
Running Office Diagnostics (no problems found)

They have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling it which doesn't work. However this process picked up the current profile and account so I'm not sure if they did it correctly or if this normally happens? I can't remember.

Any ideas?

Have you tried to do the repair install from an office disc or through the uninstall programs menu / add remove programs menu?

If that doesnt work just get the key and disc for their office then uninstall, run a microsoft cleanup tool to make sure it gone all the way, then install a fresh copy and import the data.

How about if you create a new user account and run it from there? Do you at least get the wizard?

sometimes this works for me:

Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

oddly, it has worked for me.

I would go with a bad plug in too, and the only way I can fix those on occasion is get in the computer's safe mode, then open Outlook, then disable the plugins.

As per the original post, I've removed all add-ins and deleted extend.dat so I don't think it can be to do with add-ins.

Unfortunately the resetnavpane option doesn't work either.

Go into the registry and drill down to HKLM and HKLU / Software/Microsoft/Office/12.0/

Rename Outlook to Outlook.OLD

Restart the machine.

Try again and see if that works. It should create a new set of keys that are properly permissionized.
