If you find that Opera gives this error "an error occurred while checking for updates" here is the fix.
Have the latest installer handy and go to C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera
Open the last folder in the list, (the highest version number) and delete "opera_autoupdate)
Run the installer (it recreates opera_autoupdate) and only takes a second.
Opera Menu, About Opera will now show Opera as "Up To Date."
