A question I've been wondering for a while now ... does anyone have a list of entirely open-source tools they like to use in their work? I'm mostly interested in tools relating to either deployment, or migration of an OS. But I'd love to hear about any great tools that end up being daily necessities.

There are many free tools available, such as the excellent suite of utilities from Microsoft's Sysinternals, These are not open source, but there is no fee for their commercial usage. Making such utilities open source would provide a wealth of opportunities for malware writers.

Nothing comes without a price, one you've found the free tools, you'll need to invest your own time in learning how to use them. Most do not come with manuals or help desks. Also don't forget that some of the tools you seek may be offered free for end-user use, they require a paid-for licence if they are to be used commercially.

16k_zx81 - Yeah, I did. And the link you posted isn't available to me. As for iptech ... I know the many many tools that are available, I wanted to know what each person thinks are the best and most useful Open Source tools for them. I can code, and I like FOSS because I can customize it all.

And the link you posted isn't available to me.

Thats easily fixed. Dont know if any are open source but it may be of interest

If you check out the links you'll find many that are F/LOSS. However, I don't get your insistence on F/LOSS. Free/Libre vs. Unfree is like Mac vs. PC - an utterly pointless debate. A tool is just a tool. Use it or don't. Change it or don't. But in the end your job is to fix computer problems. Your customer won't pay you any more if you use FLOSS or not. Use whatever you need to do the job.

... you're clearly just not a very good person, are you? I'm interested in a lot more than cash, and I don't care how much or little I make. I'm not trying to increase my profits, I'm trying to build a comprehensive system to do exactly what I want, exactly how I want, using bits and pieces of many other projects. You look at being a technician as a job - for me, it's my life. So, while your input is ... well, allowed, it's not appreciated, at all. Libre vs. Unfree is not a debate at all, they both have their place. The distinction matters. Go try to run a Mac program on Windows and tell me that the difference between the two is negligible.

Seriously, you're not helpful.

You can tell all that about me from a few sentences? Pretty neat trick. You should drop the day job and join one of those psychic networks. Oh, I forgot - thank you so much for allowing me to have some input. It's really very good of you.

Maybe I should have a go a the psychic gig too? Here, try this on and see if it fits...

...you're clearly a pompous buffoon. Full of your own self-importance. You like to join forums and talk about your ability to code and about how much you love FOSS. When, in fact, the furthest you've gone with free software is to download Firefox, which you were unable to configure and the most coding you did was 2 lines in basic - 10 Print "My name is Parker" 20 Goto 10. On top of all that, the spirits tell me that you have a collection of underwear stolen from the clotheslines of local ladies, which you wear for your own pleasure.

Whaddya mean, how could I tell from just a couple of sentences. It's easy fool, anyone can do it.

Care to tell us about your 'life' so far? The impression I'm getting is someone who's prepared to feed off the fruit of others yet is reluctant to re-share his own 'contribution' with the community. Your emphasis upon 'I' does not lend itself to the ideologies that underpin Open Source software.

To quote your own words... "Seriously, you're not helpful."
