Open Quickbooks file & software recommendation

Long story short;

I have a QB backup/recovery from a 2012 PC from a small plumbing business client. They are in need of a PC upgrade, the old one is dead in the water. They are very old school, they do not have an internet connection.

So, what we need to do is open the QB backup file that they have recently created, just so we can print out the contacts list. That is all they were using QB for, Name, address, phone number of the client.

The second thing we need for their new PC is a simple Word application to add all of these contacts into. I suppose Open Office will be suitable for that.

Any ideas on what to do with the QB backup?

Motherboard is toast, I think it is Win 7. I'm going to put the drive in my bench Win 8 system to see if it will read it. Should work long enough to print the list of contacts out.

I don’t follow. You don’t have a copy of Quickbooks to reload?

Quickbooks....you can open an old version company file with a new version. There are some limitations going way way back, but I'm "pretty sure" you can open a 2012 file with Quickbooks 2018. Probably 2019...

If you can browse the old hard drive (slave it to a new computer)...browse to the location where the data files were stored. The QBW file is the key...but the rest of the content inside of the folder where that lives also can have some stuff. So copy that folder over and lay on top of the same location on the new computer. File...Open Company....browse and select the <companyname>.QBW file...it will prompt to upgrade...do so, (it will prompt to back up...allow so). A Quickbooks company file is sorta like a Word document file (a .DOC)...you can move it around...and file...open.

Another approach, you can restore a backup...the .QBB file. This is really the best way to MOVE company data from Quickbooks on an old computer to a new computer. You'll need the original Admin account password for this....

You can download a 30 day trial for Quickbooks Desktop. Only the most recent version though. But it should open a 2012 file.

Edit: forgot you can still download old copies of QB Pro.

If the client properly registered their copy of QB with Intuit they should be able to redownload the software and the serial number keys and get it reinstalled. That version will still run on Windows 10.

We have the License # but they cannot locate the disk. I guess Intuit just wanted to sell us a $400 product, because the chat representative told me that QB Pro 2007 will not run on a Win 10 PC. Thanks for that information.

It is a 2012 PC. Win 7 system. QB Pro 2007 is installed on it.
