Online Backup solutions

I've written about Vembu in the past, I used it for years. Really not something I would do again due to hardware required, bandwidth and sheer pain knowing you are on the hook for the data on a 24/7 basis.

Been using Spider and Nine Technology.

Mainly Nine Technology and no problems that could not be fixed with a simple phone call.

Vembu looked most promising to me until I recived notice from AT&T this week that they will begin capping their DSL service at 50-GB/month. I will probably exceed that amount in a week or two. I am back to square 1 now. Nine Technology backs up user data but does not image the disk drive. If a hard drive fails, the soft system must be rebuilt before the user data is restored. With Vembu, I could copy the image onto the new drive and install it into the customer's system - - having them back in service in a few hours.
At least that was my plan.

Does anyone have experience with Acronis online backup?

I would like to combine the imaging technology in Acronis with their online backup. Recently I have had some problems with the latest version of True Image so I am a little hesitant to use another of their services. It would be helpful to have it all in one package though. Any experiences shared would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have used Logmein and have played with crashplan at times. For now we are using SpiderOak but the commissions are not that great. Will be looking at carbonite for 20%

I'm glad someone is.

More info? I am thinking of signing up but am a little hesitant.

Anyone else that has been using Nine Technology have any comments?

One issue I have is that there is no 'family' backup solution for home users. Most customers have at least 2 PCs, some 3 or 4 with their kid's laptops. With crashplan you can buy a family account and use it with up to 10 systems. With Nine I would be asking my customers to subscribe to an account for each computer.. which is not going to happen.

I am testing Godaddy's Online File Folder service and it appears to be working great so far. Not to mention, the price is very competitive compared to others.

Unless i'm wrong logmein backup says:

"Important computer data is securely backed up from remote computers to individual storage devices, such as servers, NAS devices or other storage systems that you own, manage and control."

So unlike normal "online backup" providers you have to manage where you are backing up the data to. So $39.95 per pc (unless done in bulk) and then whatever you pay for the location you are going to store data.

I buy 5 at a time for $30 each. !

My servers...yeah I know the thread is about online providers

Just curious. Do they cover your liability in the event of data loss? The reason we don't do self hosting with Vembu anymore is because the liability was huge.

I cover it myself, I have two servers, one replicates to the other at a different location, and they both backup online, I use crashplan for that.

So I should be covered in that case.

Since this is a Older Thread does anyoneone have any new thoughts on Online Backup reseller options.

Thanks

We are looking at becoming and Intronis reseller. I like the idea that you purchase blocks of 250, 500GB or 1Tb of data. If you sell it in small blocks such as 10GB for $15, 25GB for $30, or 50GB for $50, you will be more profitable than just selling per GB. You will require less customers to break even. Example, a lot of SMB or personal users will not need more than 10 or 25GB. If they don't use all of it to start with then you are not using all of your initial block, allowing you to leverage the amount across more clients than you would normally allocate 1:1. Essentially you are over selling your block. When it nears capacity you can upgrade to the next level. If you cannot justify the next level you are billed per/GB for anything over your purchased block. Intronis also does not sell to end users. I don't like to resell services where the company I am purchasing from is my competitor. Our local cable provider is a Carbonite reseller.

Its really what works best for what you need. How many customers you have and what you can build upon.

Logmein backup has worked great for us since we are starting slow and building up our backup clients. It gives us full control of the backup, allows us to backup to the clients local hd and to our servers.

We tried out Nine Technology but it ended up being not up to par with what we had hoped.

I have talked to Itronis and its best to have a good number of clients already according to them, generating cash flow to pay for it.

We use Intronis and have been extremely happy with them. Their ability to remotely manage the backup clients and restores has been invaluable.
