Online Backup solutions

Pay hosting fee for 10 Gig $5

Vembu licenses roughly $250 for 10 of them (full year)
Comes to roughly $25 per client license

Charge customer low end $25 a month for 10 gig. How can you
image charging them this fee is easy they are your customer.
My customers know me and my business. They do not know Mozy
or Caronbonite etc....They know they pick up the phone and we
arrive or they come to us. They have a question they call us,
or email us. Justifying the cost is not a problem.

Your cost monthly

License $2.10 Per month
Hosting $10.00 Per Month

Profit about $12.50

Very rough estimates but if you figure it out
you can really make some money on it.

Is there a solution that will support full image back ups?

Backing up the data is fine, but I would like to offer a full image service as well. Maybe just the first time or maybe at regular intervals. I think a lot of customers (small business), don't realize that these services only back up data files.

i find a good solution for home users is Mozy@home deployed it to a few clients. and its saved there bacon a few times.

And i get lots of praise due to recoving there data ;) which aint all bad

Update:

Using Mozy free for the home users that care, but don't care...keeps it simple. I am a reseller and get a small kick back and always tell clients that I do...

Using MNBU.NET http://www.mnbu.net for any larger backups, they are a partner of Crashplan.

I am using it on 2 computer and did a great restore. It's not expensive for the client and if you talk to the company, they have a referral plan. Call or email for details. Good deal for you and the client.

I don't mind the corporations, but I have many clients leary of the corps, they want a company that will drop ship you their data THAT DAY and get it overnight...not days. And MNBU has great customer service. First call, Minnesota folks answering. The owner was my neighbor 4 years ago.

Are you here because of Call That Girl? In honor of her mention about us at her blog and in her newsletter, we’re offering you a 1 month trial.

I really need to follow your advice more, you get tons of great advertising.

Now to get out of my computer geek anti-social wall....

I have been doing backups for customers for a few years not very good profit margin on it. Until recently I have used Vembu for it all. Very good program but never content. I recently hooked up with another company. So far great program, great customer support, and prices that make it so you make money.

Very soon I will have the pricing in place for the Association members to get in on it and if you offer this service you will make money. It's not your typical "reseller" payouts of $2 or $3 here and there. This will be a "White Label" (your logo) build.

So am I the only one who finds the upload speed of online backup to be prohibitively low? It seems fine for a few gig of pics and docs but after that it seems that the backup time is way to big. I tried a couple of services and gave up after a week or two of my files still not having been completely backed up (that and a letter from my ISP warning I was going over my limit).

Typically the first upload will be a bit slow depending on how much data you have. Other than that it runs when files change to the speed I have never found to be an issue. As far as a warning from you ISP not sure about that. I am taking it your ISP has you set on a limit? If that is the case incrementals should not effect it.

Please be sure to let us know about it ASAP because I am still looking for a way to provide branded backup at something I can actually afford and make money off of.

I have met with service providers who brag about how their product can backup full images but I have NEVER seen one pass the test. Some even appear to copy the image but always fail while trying to write back a 100-GB+ image to a new disk drive. I believe much of the problem is with the bandwidth and error correction. Some programs are even picky about their location on the disk drive.

When someone gets it right, they will make money with it.

Restoring images across the Net

I recommend a 3-prong approach:

1. Once computer is setup I use DriveXML to create image backup
2. Backup data & image files to a local external drive
3. Have client identify critical files/folders & back them online.

Number 1 is done once a week to catch new software installs, etc.

Number 2 & 3 are done daily, using incremental backups

This covers all the basis, but with the caveat that data recovery isn't 100% guaranteed.

Rainmanker's plan is a common one that is good enough for most home use.
Heck, most home users have no backups at all!

If it is a home-based business, I encourage them to store a recent image at a another site to prevent data loss in case of theft or fire.

Vembu is Great!!

I've been using Vembu for about 3 years now on my own servers. I find it to be the best option if you (1) own your own servers (2) need to backup sql and exchange server (3) want to make a good profit. Check it out.

I like carbonite...But also you might try out dropbox.. its perfect for file syncing and stuff...

By next week i'll have the "white label" build finalized and thru the Associaton you can get it discounted. To me this is the best way to go. Reliable, will make a profit and not as much responsibility as running your own servers with something such as Vembu (I have done it for years).

What is the name of this company you are talking about? what Association?

The acrbo.com we are getting adding a preferred vendor that is an online backup solution and the builds will all be "white label" i.e. your company name so your customers believes it's "your" solution not someone elses.

I am a Mozy reseller. I tried Carbonite a while back and wasn't too impressed so I stuck with Mozy. It is fast, easy to use, reliable, secure and I get $1.00 for every Mozy Free account signup, $15.00 for every monthly Mozy Unlimited sale and $20.00 for every annual Mozy Unlimited sale.
