I had this problem, which I resolved and I hope this helps someone.

I wanted to sign up this charity I work with, hoping to get them a big discount.

You have to sign up with the office 365 trial, then let them check your domain and web page to see if you qualify.

This is done by adding either a txt or MX record to your DNS config.
They give you a custom record to use

Problem : the charities ISP is Plusnet, who doesn't accept DNS txt files and there are problems with adding this special MX file.

So I had problems getting their domain verified as a non-profit organisation.

Here's where I abbreviate.

Plusnet : You're screwed
Office365 : you're screwed
Microsoft help : you're screwed.

So the last resort, I tried office365 community forum, and the clouds parted and I got an answer.

"This is ridiculous!

MS cannot tell you to use a CNAME to verify your domain. Worked for me and my customers Every Time !

Create a CNAME with the MSnnnnn.<your office 365 domain>"

So the answer was to use a CNAME record, which no one suggested. Only that forum user.

"You should have ms60384699 as a CNAME (pointing to) ps.microsoftonline.com

Hopes this helps someone.
