I had a customer needing her motherboard replaced in an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC. Before i changed the motherboard the computer wouldn't do anything at all. No lights no nothing. When I changed the motherboard out and put the new one in the computer booted right up only thing that is odd is there is about a half inch band across the bottom of the screen of white lines that appear to be scrolling through what is on the screen. I'm very  by this. Can anyone give some insight as to what may be causing this problem?

I would definitely look at the graphics card. If it is on-board, put one in a pci slot see if that does it. If it has an actual card, try another one and see if that'll do it.

Are you using a on-board video card or is it a separate card?

I must have confused you when I said it was a HP pavilion it is a laptop. so yes on-board video. When plugged into another monitor the screen comes up perfect - no lines at all. I just tried this this morning and it worked. what could be causing the main screen to have the lines?

I would check to see that when you re-assembled after the MB replacement surgery that you got the ribbon cable for the LCD correctly re-attached.

In my experience it's usually cable related, but obviously being a laptop it could be other things. It may also be worth checking the LCD for any signs of damage, perhaps that why the mb broke, dropped perhaps? Could have damaged the screen too.

Well no visible damage to the screen that I can tell. Cable was plugged in completely and plug cleaned to clear any debris that may have gotten in the hole. I'm still kind of stumped - I called the client to see if it was doing this before the computer went down but got their voice-mail so I'm waiting for a call back. Anything else it may be - could it be the inverter going bad?

Absolutely not. The way you described it is a textbook busted LCD. Just because there isn't a visible impact point doesn't mean its not cracked. More than likely cracked in one of the bottom corners. Push on the screen lightly and I'll bet it comes and goes. The only PIA is since you received the machine dead its hard to tell if that was the way it was before you fixed it. But if you didn't even mess with the LCD I'd assume that's the way it was before. Just let them know its also got a cracked LCD.

I just finished with a similar problem.

Video was going out so I recommended a new mobo. The mobo was bad.
But the computer was doing the same thing with the newer mobo too.
Client thought I had gotten a bad mobo for them, but turns out the power supply was going bad.
Replaced the PSU and all was fine.

You replaced the power supply on a laptop?, and that fix your screen issue?

What model pavilion entertainment laptop is it? IF it's a 6000 or 9000 series...HP had many many problems out of those machines with bad video on the motherboard. Yes, you replaced the motherboard, but be careful that you didn't get a bad one.

Another thing to try is plug up an external monitor to the laptop and see if the band you are seeing in still there...if it is, then it's not the LCD and more than likely would be something on the motherboard or a cable issue as others have said.

I'm not trying to be like some of the other people on here, but please read the entire thread before you post other than it being a DV6000 your post has already been addressed in the previous post. Also the problem has been completely solved replaced the screen and all is well.

rob, be careful how you speak to people on here...you might loose help when you need it most. We're only trying to help and sometimes people will miss things in the posts. I don't post here often, as I usually am too busy running my business, however when I have time I like to give back. Arrogance doesn't pay. Enough said.

I'm not sure what roborobs means by:

But otherwise, he was just telling you to read all the posts. I can see a thread that goes on at least 5 pages that is full short story replies of discussion on politics or the meaning of life, but this thread was only two pages with very short replies on troubleshooting a video problem. Would take all of 30 seconds to browse through the replies, before the other 60 seconds it took you to reply with your laptop video troubleshooting for dummies reply.
