No Keyboard and No Fix

Got an interesting one...

System has Windows 10 and got the "anniversary edition" update on it. Shortly after he had a system crash.

System reboots but goes into "Preparing Automatic Repair." Sure, that's fine. I can work with that. It comes up to the blue screen where it asks me to choose which keyboard layout I have.

The baffling part is that the keyboard or mouse are no longer recognized. NO keyboard or mouse is recognized by Windows 10. I've tried three different keyboards and half a dozen different mice. Nothing.

Now, I can boot the machine into a Linux Live distro and the keyboard and mouse are seen without issue. I can boot into a Windows 10 Rescue Disc and the keyboard and mouse are seen without issue.

So, the issue isn't the hardware. For some reason the install of Windows 10 just isn't seeing the keyboard or mouse.

There's no PS/2 ports on this machine either.

Corrupt drivers? Any ideas?

I'd start by booting into WinRE and doing a chkdsk and then a sfc scan to make sure you're working with a full deck. Windows automatic repair is rarely automatic. Cover your basics and did you check the hard drive SMART info? You might be working with a failing hard drive and corrupt files. There are plenty of issues with Win10 not recognizing the kb and mouse but that repair message says something isn't right. You could also see if there are any restore points or a reg backup to swap out the current registry. I'd cover the basic before getting further involved with drivers.

Man....how I totally wish I was wrong on this....

chkdsk came back with a small number of errors.

sfc can't be run because of the pending repair however I ran Ultimate Boot CD and Partition Magic. That came back with no errors for an extended surface scan and no SMART errors.

Also, there are no restore points.

The basic stuff is fine...this one just kinda launches headlong into the weird.

Have you checked that KB and mouse are on/active in BIOS?

The KB and mouse work in every aspect of the computer BUT the install of Windows 10: True Image, Xubuntu 14 Live, Knoppix Live (two different versions), Ultimate Boot CD and Windows 10 Rescue....all come up with the keyboard and mouse.

Hard drive (lack of) health?

That was my first suspicion as well! Generally as a "first step" measure I clone the drive with True Image and have found that if there are any physical errors then that's where they're going to turn up.

I have run a chkdsk and used Partition Magic to do a whole drive scan and check the SMART status.

As much as I want to point to the drive and accuse it of failure I'm at a total loss to be able to do so!

Thanks....

Gotta love these things that make you chase your tail and want to retire.......................LOL
Been there done that. Win 10 has more than it's share of glitches.
How do you charge a customer for spending 4 hours or more screwing around with this stuff.
Wipe and reload, but that is usually after the fact??????

Did you boot from a Linux cd or parted magic to manually restore a backup registry?

Will it boot in safe mode with keyboard and mouse working?
