A pair of security researchers recently uncovered a Nigerian scammer ring that they say operates a new kind of attack called “wire-wire” after a few of its members accidentally infected themselves with their own malware. Over the past several months, they’ve watched from a virtual front row seat as members used this technique to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from small and medium-sized businesses worldwide.

This has been going on for years. One example: double glazing firm email got hacked. Spammers replied to a customer email from the glazing firm's mailbox. Scammer told the customer that the payment had not gone through due to recent change of bank. The customer sent the payment three times to the scammers in then end. Customer is the victim of the crime. Glazing firm still had to be paid regardless that it was their email that got hacked.

We can only advise business clients to double check payment details changes by phone. And buy cyber crime insurance!
