Cheers buddy i will take a look, I have a lot to learn in just over a week. I don't want to be an expert but just be comfortable enough to know i wont severely screw up the servers.

"lot to learn in just over a week"? Heh...it's an ongoing process. Heck I've been doing this nearly 20 years and still learning!
o_O right... when you put it that way...
I just need to learn the basics so not to screw something up, the rest I should learn on the job as thats the point of a placement

I think i might have to invest in a licence key. I have a copy of windows server 2012 but just need a key. I believe it will be so much easier

If for tinkering/learning/evaluation purposes, you can always download/install/use Windows Server 2012R2 for a trial use (180 days, extendable)....

Well that is certainly quite a list to get started with, is there anything else worth looking at?

I will edit this post with new points. My aim here would be to write an article for anyone new to servers, sound like a good idea?

If you search for these points individually on Youtube, you can likely find multiple quality videos explaining/demonstrating each principle....
