New Raspberry Pi

I am a ham radio operator as one of my other many hobbies. I got a Pi 2 last year and have it operating as an APRS system. Those of you who don't know what that is, think of it as GPS, but using ham radio. :) Its pretty awesome and it's been running solid since I set it up. Now I need a fist full of Pi's for other projects. Perhaps this Pi Zero will be a great alternative that's a little more financially sound with buying a lot of Pi's. :)

I'd never heard of this but sounds cool. Do you have any links/recommended places for tutorials/ software to install on Pi?

I got a couple links for ya...

If you go to openaprs.net, put "St. Francis MN" (without the quotes) and you should see me just to the right of where it says "St. Francis" on the map :)

The project that I followed, and seems to have quite a strong following, is called Direwolf. His site is https://home.comcast.net/~wb2osz/site/ But unfortunately now that I am trying to get to his site, it seems to be down or something right now. This is where I got all my information and learned how to set it up. If by chance, you can't get the site to come up, I would keep trying. Ive never seen his site down before. :)

just got a PBX installed on a Raspberry Pi 2 at work for Long distance \ 2nd number and a few Cisco 7940 IP phones (flashed to SIP) really neat device!
Ward Mundy has a great step by step setting up a pi here:
http://nerdvittles.com/?p=17094
he does not cover setting up a Cisco phone but a soft phone.

Here is an idea I have for practical use of the Pi. I have some small MSP clients I support that may only have a couple or a few PCs and no server. Or maybe just a NAS device. I often run into situations I wish I had my own system I could remote into because:

  • the customer is currently using their computers or
  • the customer has powered off their computer(s) and I want to send WOL packets to them after hours.
  • I need to check out their network printers or moxa device or router or other devices web admin page or for putty access or just to ping it.
  • I need a different computer on their network to see if it can access a website that is failing to load on another of their network devices.

It seems to me like it would be incredibly useful to be able to plug in one of these tiny computers running linux configured for remote access like screenconnect that I could use for whatever I needed whenever I wanted to.

Anybody doing anything like this?

Some sites I just set up a Dell USFF system like a 780 w/o a monitor or keyboard. But doing this on a device the size of a Pi would be the ultimate setup if it would work.

Might be a bit on the slow side but I have yet to play with a pi 3.

Neat idea. If you get one setup let us know how it works for you.

Just a Raspberry Pi (Original) running some old Consoles, made out of some MDF with a cheap Chinese USB Arcade controller kit.

Grrr.... Those wankers in Redmond. My main purpose for getting the 3 was to check out W10 IoT. Finally got my 3 and start to setup it up. I HAVE to have W10 installed to get W10 IoT.

Well that's lame. :/ Well, maybe do something cooler with it. Im very curious if I could do a Kodi media system or my APRS system on a Pi Zero. For $5 it may be worth a shot. :)

Yeah. But it is what it is. Even though I personally use very little in the way of M$ products it still is a major market force. There was a huge surge in Linux starting in the mid to late 2000's but I saw M$ get a lot of it back. Especially in the dedicated device market. Hence trying W10 IoT. That being said I've gone ahead and downloaded Raspberian to try while I'm doing the W10 update. Got to make an image since I'm not going to waste my time doing a VM in case M$ some other undocumented features. LOL!!!

Yeah, any of the *nix's work fine. I was not worried about those. Looks like I have to use N00Bs to install the W10IoT preview. Guessing that will be the favored method in the future. Just wish they had picked a name other than N00B.... LOL!!!!
