We have been in business a little under a year and everything is great. Well not everything, but we have had huge growth, great client base, and no signs of slowing down. We have a professionally designed SEO website going up soon, and are moving to a bigger, better office.

That being said I have been unhappy with the company name since the beginning. When I started off I didn't put much thought into it. So I have been trying to think of a new name before the new website goes up and we move into the new shop.

So what do you think?

Old name:
Jimmy's Technology
Service & Repair

New Name:
Contemplating Robot
Computer Repair
I know it sounds a little strange at first, but I think with the right logo it could be great and catch peoples attention. I have talked to a logo designer about basing the logo off of a line drawing of a modified version of Marvin from hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, and they think that it would look great.

Of the people I have told 90% are for it, 10% against. But your opinions carry a lot of weight with me, so let me know.

Thanks,
James Hardin

Jimmy's Technology
or
Contemplating Robot

Yeah, I have given that some serious consideration. I think I might have them draw up both and see what it looks like then.

Who wants to do business with a robot? Jimmy's Technology...? "Jimmy's Computer Repair" is much more personable and on-the-mark, in my view, and more likely to show up when people Google for computer repair.

We do get good SEO rankings. I just thought that it sounded kinda bubba, but I am glad that I have you guys to give me an outside perspective.

I like Jimmy's better too. Add's that flair of "the owner is around"

I don't like the robot idea either, but haven't seen the logo to see how it matches.

If you are smaller business and plan on staying small, go with the quick and easy name to remember.

What about...
Jimmy's Tech Shop
Jimmy's computer Shop
Jimmy's Workshop
Jimmy's Work Bench

If you plan on being bigger than just one location, then go with a name that is not attached to you, Jimmy.

The Work Bench
The computer repair shop
etc...then if you grow, you have a branded name outside of your own.

Easier to franchise, sell, etc.

Just my 2 cents:)

Yup, it is "bubba". But apparently you're making a success of it anyway. Don't mess with success.

And "Contemplating Robot" is worse. IMO if you really had 90% of the people you asked say it's great, you've been asking people who would rather not hurt your feelings.

If you have already been using one name then I would stick with it.

Agreed.

If you want to expand your business to be more generic or something, create a parent company that the repair business operates under so that brand stays while you build your other brand into what you want to make of it.

If you want a more generic name you could even do something like J Tech or something like that. Keeping your name and just initialing it. That way it's just short for what you are already using, so either the new way or the old way would be acceptable and usable. Your old business cards, signs, etc could remain the same while embracing the new name. Then as you need to replace or order new in the future, you could gradually use the initialed name. Once you have a name that works I'd stick with it. I think just shortening the name up using initials is really the only way to successfully change a successful personal brand name.

I use to work for a computer store named South Pacific Systems and we would always refer to the name as SPS.

I like the sound of "J Tech". Maybe J Tech Computer Repair or Services?

I like the J Tech idea too. My company name is Incredible Computer Solutions. Kinda long and doesn't exactly roll off the tongue so most of the time it is referred to as ICS. Even in my flyers and other adverts i initially introduce myself as Incredible Computer Solutions but in the rest of the ad i refer to ICS.

So yours could be JTR? :)

I like the J Tech idea as well; you want your business to have a name that will cover a broad range of computer repair services. Not feeling the Jimmy's Computer Repair either. It sounds too 'boy-next-door'-:)-:)

Contemplating Robot.. I'd stick with what you have. It may be a good name for a scene/emo band, though. I could see the flyer on the crap bar now... "Contemplating Robot, 36Bears, WolfBearMotherSonDaughter, Birdtreegreenmotherwolf, and 3homosinaNissansedan August 15th! 2 dollar door and 1 dollar drafts!"
