I know this sorta thread is overdone, but I appreciate any help. I'm just starting out and my few clients know me by name, so it's a clean slate. I live in Colorado Springs, CO and honestly don't really care about the name a ton. Below is what I've thought up so far.

Pikes Peak IT Services
Gjallarhorn Computers
Pikes Peak Tech Services

Keep in mind, every other business is named Pikes Peak ... including PP Computer Repair. Any ideas for the latter half of the name would be awesome. Thanks so much for your input, I really appreciate it.

Bolharr, I have owned 3 different businesses with different names. I even used my own name like Eric's Consulting and was never happy with it.. The name matters and trust me it is something we want to care about. Changing a name after you have an established business can do harm or help.. I think the name should relate to what you want to offer for services. If you have a business plan use that to assist with the name.. I would avoid computers in modern names because you may want to branch out your services. Especially if you focus on a niche like telephony work.

Pike Peak IT Services is not bad. Or as you mentioned maybe shortening it to PP IT Consulting. You could also use references to your location. I know where Colorado Springs is I think its a nice town and I use to live in Denver. So you could do Central IT Services or Central Consulting if you want to keep it short..

I hope this helps a little!

There is a lot to a business name. Should be something easy to remember and but not too common. So if there are lots of Pikes Peak places I'd pass on that as part of the name. You also want to have something that you can grab the FQDN. Preferably a .com if at all possible.

coloradospringstechservices.com is available.

Yeah but having a bazillon character long name isn't good either. Makes it a PITA to type in.

What about picking other less common used names associated with area to use instead of Pike Peak? Cheyenne It Services, Front Range Technologies, or El Paso IT Services.

Yeah, I'm not sure including Pike's Peak in the name is such a good idea...ESPECIALLY if all the other businesses in your area use it.

But I definitely don't recommend using Gjallarhorn, that would be a nightmare to try to spell if you weren't familiar with the word.

I think you may want to go back to the drawing board. It's good to use your local area in the name, but definitely not a requirement. Think outside the box and come up with some crazy names, then sleep on it a couple days and revisit the names with fresh eyes....you'll be surprised what looked good at first ends up looking strange and something may stand out at that point. Naming your Business is definitely not a trivial thing...but it also doesn't need to be rocket science.

Just a side note, as you said your current clients know you by name... If you use your last name, and I description of what you do, as the name of your company, you won't need to file for a fictitious business name. Smith IT Services, if your name was Smith, would build on what name recognition you have, and save you some of the startup costs.

Also, provided your last name isn't as common as Smith, you likely could find a shorter domain name like NameITS.com

Thanks for all the input! My last name is fairly easy to remember and short. I'm thinking of passing up on the Pikes Peak part, but Colorado Springs is just so long I don't know how I could fit that into a URL. I'm going back to the drawing board for a bit and will post a few more ideas if you ladies and gents would like to see them.

Also, do you think I should go with any name with "IT" in it? I understand that the term is well understood by business clients, but I'm primarily aiming for residential clients.

Thanks again for all the help guys!

New ideas! I gave it some thought, and have a few more ideas to bounce off the forums:

Mountain Man Computers/Tech
Super Sonic Tech
Monument Tech/Computer Services (monument computers is taken)
El Paso Computers/Tech Services
Gleneagle Computers (small suberb, right outside of monument)
Blackforest Computers

Mountain Man - sounds archaic
Super Sonic Tech - sounds too space age
Monument Tech - if there's another named Monument Computers I'd stay away as people won't necessarily distinguish between the 2.
Blackforest Computers - nice catch to it and most likely different than any other company nearby.

How about "Eagle Tech" - A bird's eye view on your network.

Take comments with grain of salt. They are coming from someone who named their company Black Lab Technologies. lol.

Right now Black Forest computers seems like the best option. Its the name of a large rural suburb that neighbors me. Do you think that if I name myself that people would think I only operate in that area, or would they have any hesitancy about using my services?

So you are naming yourself after a suburb you are not in??? Are the boundaries of that suburb really well defined? If not then you are OK but if so then it would be like calling yourself Manhattan IT Services when you have a store in the Bronx.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The boundaries are not very well defined, and I'm a mobile technician and don't (currently) have a store front. While I like the idea of a location based name, I need to do something based on my city or not at all, because when someone searches "Bronx computer repair" and they see your name "Manhattan IT Services" they assume you don't serve their area or are not what they are looking for. Thanks for the feedback!

Okay, so I've given it some thought and the name at the top of the list is Atheon Computers. Looking for any initial reactions or thoughts on the name.

Thanks so much guys, this has been a really awesome community to work with, and I look forward to being an active member for a while to come!
