Need some input with my business name.

Hey guys. I have my own computer business as most of us do.

I'm going to use 48logo get to my logo made, after seeing some of the quality work for BryanLee, Paul Rogers, etc.

The graphics designer I thought was going to work out flaked out on me and keep putting me off for weeks, but that is besides the point.

My question is

My company name is Wig-Tek (on my federal tax id).

For my website/cards/ etc.

If I use Wig-Tek Computer Solutions or Computer Repair or some other variation in the logo would that be conflicting with my registered tax id name? Would people be able to write checks (if I accept them..doubt i will) to Wig-Tek. After seeing alot of company names using some variation <Name Computer Solutions, etc), I want it to be professional as possible. If I have to get a new tax id, not a big deal.

If not which sounds better..

Wig-Tek Computer Solutions (I'm leaning towards this one)
Wig-Tek Computer (PC) Repair.

My demographic is going to residential and the small business owner (when possible).

As far as having a different name on your marketing materials, that should be fine if you file a DBA (doing business as) with the IRS so they know that the two names go to the same business.

As far as a business name, after saying mine over and over for a year and a half at networking events and to clients to put on a check, I want to change mine. I've since made a list of rules when I do get a new company name and one of them involves simplicity. I would recommend keeping it 2-3 words (I count Wig-Tek as two words so both of your suggestions wouldn't work). Since Wig-Tek doesn't seem to be getting the recognition you're looking for, what about just expanding the two words (Wig Technology)?

I'm still in the develop stage of my business. I haven't officially pulled the trigger. I want to get my marketing finalized, but people seem to like the name.

Wig-Tek is what I decided a while ago. My last name is Wigger, so I wanted to integrate that into my business name.

I like wig-tech solutions (I spelt it tech on purpose) gets the same name as before, but gets technology solutions integrated in a clean manner, imo

Wigger is german. I'm 33 and I didn't hear at derogatory till I moved from Indianapolis to a farmer town at the age of 12. People still thinks it's crazy that my name is that when i first meet them. oh well. lol

I agree tech would be cleaner, but imo Wig-Tech doesn't look as cool. Wig-Tek.

The question is, "Cool to whom?" Most of my customers tend to be over 50; quite the majority, in fact. By using the trendier "tek", you have to ask yourself if you might be alienating part of your customer base.

I'm mid-40s and tend to avoid any business using unnecessary misspellings in their names ("Lidz", "Kool Klothez"). I would certainly stay away from "____ Komputerz".

OP, you clearly described your target market. Why not choose a name that will be easily understood by that market? My business name isn't very imaginative but it strikes a chord with with my market and I get a lot of calls just because of my name. How do I know? People make a point of telling me.

Choosing a name isn't about being cool, cutting edge, or ego-stroking. Or at least it shouldn't be. Pick a name that is understandable without explanation, memorable and will make you money today and in 10 years (when you sell your business for millions).

I choose my name to be unique and memorable which I believe it is. I don't want have a business name that I am not happy with from day one. I might be a lil defensive or it could be just stubbornness but I am going to give Wig-Tek Computer Solutions a go for a while. If I need to change it down the line due to the stated reasons, I will make that decision then.

If you are registered with the IRS and your new business is the same type, then your EIN is good for more than one business so you do not have to change anything there. If you change you business name you just need an assumed name and tax id from your state. If you change your type of business, llc, partnership, etc, then you need to get a new EIN

as others have said, avoid the "cool" misspelling of Tek, and the Computer Repair bit is better for SEO IMHO

no offense but the Wig bit does kinda point towards, well, wigs - so you might get more hits on your website from people looking for a new syrup

Hello,

when I think about Wig-Tek my mind immediately comes up with some sort of wig repair or fitting service. Maybe not the idea you want to convey.

My computer repair company is called LJ Onsite (LJ being my initials). Some customers tell me it is a catchy name, others ask how my last name came to be "Onsite"... ugh.

"Wigger Fixes PC's" might not be a bad choice. Tells the customer right off what you do. Or go with a name unrelated to your surname.

You might consider dropping the Tech and just having "Wig Computer Repair". The Tech just seems redundant.

Don't sweat the marketing materials man. Work on a name that you won't mind saying 5,000 times and that clients can write correctly on a check.
