I'm waiting on the city to approve my permit to add my new sign, and here is my idea. Let me know what you think.

(I'm thinking some sort of separation between computer repair and everything else)

Thanks

A couple of things. When you look at the middle picture, you are looking at the sign approximately the same way your customers will be looking at it as they drive by. It's not very big. I also see from that picture that you're located on a street with a 40-mile-per-hour speed limit. That further reduces the time that potential customers will have to see your sign.

In addition, when you photoshopped the yellow section in, you didn't account for the fact that the rest of the sign is relatively underexposed in the picture. The amount of pop that you'll get with the yellow background will be quite a bit less than is depicted in the photos, so take that into consideration.

My thought is that it's too hard to read your small writing as I drive by at 40 mph. Actually, my thought is that the sign in general is pretty horrible. It's high up in the air and way too cluttered to be of much use, add to the fact that you're on the bottom of the four businesses and you have extra problems. None of that is your fault, but it's the hand you've been dealt.

My thought is go with generic "COMPUTER REPAIR" text as big and bold as you can make it, or just your logo as big as you can make it, with no other distracting text like a phone number. You may also consider adding a black stripe to the top to give your sign a bit of visual separation from the rest of the signs.

My street sign is also a horrible and cluttered one, so I've learned some things from the mistakes I made.

Nope, I did account for the weathered look of the other signs and lowered the levels about 35%. So, your saying just have the words "COMPUTER REPAIR", with no name to associate the business with? not even the phone number?

Needing the phone number on there would depend if your passing traffic is going to get a chance to write it down. If there are traffic lights near your sign, and the number is visible from there, then it might be a good idea since customers could write it down or key it into their phones when they've stopped.

If the traffic is zooming by continuously at 40mph then the space could be better used for something else.

Your customers will be using your street sign for two purposes. One, if they didn't know you exist, they'll notice your sign each time they drive by any they'll make a mental note that you're there. Second, some of your customers know your address and will be looking for your physical location the first time so they can drop off their computer.

In instance 1, I just don't think your sign is big enough to have much promotional value. At least get the most bank for your buck by advertising what kind of business is there, so they can see there's a computer repair center at that location, and they'll no where to look when they have a need. With instance 2, I think that customers who are looking for you still won't be able to find you unless they know exactly what to look for because the writing is too small to see at 40 mph. The "Bench Tech" logo works fine here because that's what they're going to be looking for, but for the people in instance #1, they're not going to know what type of business "Bench Tech" is.

I think a simple "COMPUTER REPAIR" meets both uses, not as well as a bigger sign would, but it's the best choice in your particular example.

Of course, if there is another computer repair center a short distance away, then a plain "COMPUTER REPAIR" would be a poor choice.

I feel that people who want your phone number, will either stop to get it or find a means to get it.

Having "COMPUTER REPAIR" and your logo on the sign should be just enough. The goal of a sign, for me at least, is to let the customer or passersby know where your business is (and I suppose in the case of us techies, WHAT our business is). Looks great, regardless.

I'm not sure how it would look but perhaps you should maximize the height for both "computer repair" and your logo? Just speculating though.

The sign looks great. I was concerned about the phone number being to small to read, but since two other businesses on that sign don't even have numbers then I guess it's ok.

Perhaps you can just get ride of your phone number and make your business name bigger.
