Hi all,

Got a call from a client today, said her Aspire One netbook would not connect to the internet via wireless, but did via Ethernet cable.

I got into the admin page of the router and WIFI was disabled, so I enabled it.
My (almost identical) netbook found the network and connected via wifi and I was able to browse away.

Clients PC then found the network, said it was connected, but wouldn't open any web pages in either Chrome or IE.

I disabled the network adapter and deleted the drivers, installed new driver from the Acer website, but still no pages opening (signal was strong and wifi was connected)!!

I took the netbook back home with me to run some scans on it and guess what? It connects to my wifi without any problems!

So, my PC works on her wifi, her PC works on my wifi but not on her own.

Any thoughts please?

In these cases I usually go to the wifi manager and delete the profile that it has saved for her connection and start again. I have found this to work most of the time.

If not check what security the WIFI is using and try changing it to see of that has helped. I have seen a few that didn't like a security setting but worked on another.

Probably my first step in that situation would be to turn off wireless security on the problem router and see if you can connect from the netbook. Go from there depending on the result. I always carry a Edimax USB wireless dongle with me.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated ;)

Currently running scans on the PC as there is NO history of Windows 7 updates and her AV program expired months ago!!

Ok, MBytes just finished and found two PUP.InstallBrain.

Will run another few programs and see what they find.

Thanks again.

I'll typically change the name of the SSID just to avoid these situations, as they pop up more often than not. Customers don't seem to mind, most of the time its some weird router designated name anyways.

Going back to client tomorrow with the netbook fully updated and MSE running.
Scanned it a couple of times more today and it's looking clean.
Can't believe she had updates turned off since the day she bought it (about 18 months ago)

Going to power cycle the router and maybe try ipconfig /release and renew on her PC.
Failing that, I will hard reset the router and start the connection from scratch.

Any thoughts?

Before you take it back, make sure it connects to your wireless network. No good taking it back, with all those updates done through Ethernet, and failing to check the wireless connectivity on a known good working wireless router.

Andy

Thanks Andy, all updates were done via WIFI and it's still connected.

Just have a feeling that I'm missing the elephant in the room!!

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS.

If you've got it there, there is no excuse for not ensuring that it CAN connect to a wireless network. If it can't connect to hers, that's another issue.

Yeah, that was the headache! It would connect to mine but not her own, yet my PC would connect to her network.

As said, did all the updates on her machine via my home wifi network without any problems.

Cleaned a lot of crap and BHO from it, installed AV and all Win7 updates, did the ipconfig /renew and took it back to her today (with my fingers crossed)

Power on, network found, surfing away :D

Thanks all for the advice.
