NEED HELP with Dell laptop!

I am working on a Dell Inspiron E1505 that locks up after you log in to Windows. At first I thought it had a virus but I have not found any viruses.

Here are the symptoms:

-I log in and the desktop loads
-Everything locks up but I can still move the mouse
-The HDD light stays completely solid!

Any ideas? Right now I am guessing it is a faulty drive (I got three drive write errors with Dell diagnostics)

Rootkit???
Memory???

Did you also try getting to the desktop via safe mode to see if you get the same results?

Since you're drive error msgs, have you tried chdsk to see if there are any sectors that can be repaired?

Client's machine? Is there data you need to try to recover/save?

First of all, have you tried UBCD4Win or any live cd and seen if the machine acts normally?

Secondly, have you attempted a chkdsk on the drive? most live cds have that included (an ntfs chkdsk utility) or you can boot the bartpe os and do it there.

Lastly, I HAVE come across a boot sector virus that does what you have described but I can't be 100% sure that's what it is. I recommend you run root repeal ( go to files, then scan there ) and/or you can do an fdisk /mbr seperately. Just google for it you should find it right away.

Have you checked the health of the drive? HHDtune or similar?

I would also get rid of Norton and see what happens.
 
Yea get rid of norton

Find out what kind of drive it is, and use Hirens boot disk as it has all the manufacturer tools on it and run scans with it. Sounds like the drive is bad to me..
 
I had a similar problem with one of those. The drive was running in PIO instead of DMA. It didn't totally lock up, but it was extremely slow. Changed it back to DMA and the machine ran great after that.
 
have you looked in the management tools to see whats going on with the cpu and memory?

also process explorer to see what processes running
 
sorry guys... I am back. I ran chkdsk and defragmented the hard drive and now it works good.
