Alright so here's the scoop, the wife is 9 months pregnant and about to pop any day now, and I just purchased my first house (from an apartment) in February. So I'm completely broke for anything involving christmas presents. I was thinking I could just convert all my parents old 8mm home videos to dvd's and hand them out as presents for all the relatives.

Here's the issue, the camcorder only has an rca out option, no firewall or usb out. So I need to know what type of graphics card would have an rca video in port to be able to capture the video onto the pc. Also for anyone thats done this before what is some good software for editing and authoring. Thanks

the process can be done with a stand alone DVD burner.

I set this up for a client. if i remember correctly it was a burner by Pioneer

u can also get a converter from rca to s video. most newer video card support this option.

the software can be found for free I just don't remember enough to be more specific.

"the camcorder only has an rca out option, no firewall or usb out." oops "firewire"
The cheapest way is to get your hands on a rca to usb converter they go for $25US on ebay. They do the job fine but have some compatability issues and the plus is that they generally come with free video editing software (older versions of ulead).

Google for "external usb video capture ez grabber" that's the one I have it works but as I said has some issues.
(Is it 8mm tape or the older 8mm film)
p.s.I did the same for my family most of them didn't even watch the dvds so I got them to come over for a brunch and had some short clips playing while they ate that got them real intrested.

Did some research on "external usb video capture ez grabber" looks exactly what I'm looking for. Didn't know you could just use a simple cable convertor and thought I would need a video capture card.

I did find a few "rca to usb" convertors on ebay for only $10 w/ shipping. So can I use any cheap cable to do the trick or should I just spend a little more and get the ez grabber like you recommend.

I recommend ez grabber because I've used it and it came with editing software other then that I have no preference above other cables.
(i think the ez grabber actually is a small video capture card)
