NEED AN ANSWER QUICK for an LSASS.exe-app error problem

So I just booted up a client's PC. I've tried EVERYTHING, safe mode, last known good config, ran stinger from BartPE... I can't get anything. I don't want to format this because that's not a very good answer, but it's getting to the point I don't know what else to do.

Any suggestions? I have about 4 1/2 hours before I have to call my client telling him it's done. I had no idea this was going to take this long, I've had it since 3pm yesterday.

So...you quoted a specific amount of time that it would take? Learn a lesson from that.

At the moment I'm backing up their important info to an external hd and I'm probably just going to run the compaq recovery partition. Screw it. I need this job done. Windows alone is going to take about 30 minutes. Then I need to get an antivirus on it and everything else before he gets it back. Avira AntiVirus? What are your opinions? I like it.

So can you boot into windows? if not, have you run a repair recovery?

once in - have you run anti-spyware and anti-malware scans? i dont mean from a PE disk - from the HDD?

Wow - so you know - I'm not real familiar with repair recovery. I was reading a site about it not even an hour ago, but it confused the heck out of me, and I'm not easily confused.

I already backed up their "my documents" "desktop" and "favorites" folder and he said he does nothing but check his email and pay bills so it'll work out this time. But next time, I may not be so fortunate so if you can point me in the right direction so I can use the recovery console correctly, I'd be appreciative.

as a pc tech though surely anyone who works on pc's should know about what the Recovery console can do, its one of the first things i would have done but i also i would have tried restoring the registry to an earlier time by using ubcd as this fixes many boot issues, since it works fine in safe mode then its not a problem with the system ram so ubcd all the way

if you can get into safe mode scan with combofix,malwarebytes,spybot to at least see if its infected.

A repair install is different from repairing things in recovery console.
When I do a repair install I make sure to get the exact same version of windows XP that the client is using. This is why it is helpful to have an OEM and Retail COPY of both home and professional. Then what you need to do is insert the installation disc of whichever version they have (typically OEM for manufactured PCs) go through the install like it's a clean install, EXCEPT it should recognize the previous installation and then ask you if you would like to repair the installation. If this doesn't happen, then you are most likely using the wrong version of XP and you need to try another. As long as you use the right version then when you get to the part where you enter the cd key the key from the sticker on the pc should work. After you finish the install alot of times you have to call M$ to activate the key. Just explain to them that you are doing a repair install on the same hardware and they will grant you an activation code. Problem solved.
