Bit of a strange one. Have a Client who has 4 win 10 pro 64bit computers on a peer to peer network. Along with this is a Netgear RN10200 ReadyNAS 102 2-Bay NAS. Some time last year it started losing Office files. It had RED series drive that were about 5 years old that have been replaced. Files can be copied to the NAS and then within about 5 minutes they disappear. The files were disappearing prior to HDD replacement. All computers are upto date with updates. Client runs Office 365.

So to test, create files 2 Word, 1 Excel and 1 Save to PDF. save files to NAS check NAS yes they can be seen. 5 minutes later go back and files have vanished.
Enable SMB 1 and repeat same thing happens. this occurs with all 4 computers

Amy ideas on what could be happening

Yeah, someone or something is deleting the files.

Bad drives don't cause files to vanish, they cause entire filesystems to not work. Enabling SMBv1 just opens he door for more abuse, and also does nothing to address the symptoms displayed.

You've got something or someone deleting files. I'll bet if you take the NAS offline, and attach your laptop to it and put some files on it and wait 10min, the files will still be there.

Will give it a try, but I do know that noone is deleting the files. I just have to find out what the SOMETHIING is. SMB1 was enabled to to test to make sure that it was not creating a tmp file, but I see the file name with the correct extension then it was disabled again

Are the original files deleted (deliberately, as part of the workflow) from the client after copying to the NAS? Is there a background sync. process that's deleting files from the NAS when they're removed from the client?

Only Office files involved?

I'd be looking for some nas backup/sync function that might have some dubious options related to removing files after they have been backed up

I agree. Ethernet directly from your own laptop to the NAS. Give your laptop a static IP in the same subnet. Access the fileshare and test.

If it doesn't happen with a direct connection you know something on the network is to blame so...
- Shutdown all 4 computers and reconnect the NAS to the network. Test again.
- Power up 1 computer. Test again.
- Power up a 2nd computer. Test again

etc etc.... until you find the culprit.

PS.
In the unlikely event you can find log files, odds are they will only show the user who deleted the files. Most times in small networks like this everyone uses the same credentials so that information is absolutely useless.

Files were saved direct to NAS only not PC, due to deletions occurring they are saved to PC and NAS they are still on the pc but gone from the NAS

Just an update JPEG saved fine and do not delete, PDF Word and Excel disappear. Going to shut all PC's bar one down and test and work our way through them to see if it is one of them causing the issue
