Having a problem with a number of drives… Here is the history on them:
Well over a year ago we setup a NAS system for ourselves… 12 Maxtor 300gb drives in a server case. We used a linux software (not sure which one at the moment) and a security option was set in the system so no one on the outside could get in.
Well, a few months go by and problems arose and we could no longer access the system and we could not get the NAS repaired and back up and running. It’s been sitting for about 8 months or so and we’ve since build ourselves a new NAS with 2Tb drives.
So yesterday we decided to put some of those 300Gb Maxtor drives into a Dell Poweredge 2950 we are building out for a small client. We got errors when setting up the raid. Just wouldn’t work. Installed 3 – 750Gb Seagates and had no problem getting it set up in Raid.
Thought I look at the drives a little closer. Disk Management in Windows XP does not see the drive.
I decided to run Seatools for Dos on the drives as maybe a low level format would work? That program said this: “This drive is Security Locked, High Security is set”. There was no low-level format available in that program and the ‘short test’ would start, go to 30% but no farther, waited at least 45 minutes.
I ran HDDR (hard disk drive regenerator) and it starts right out saying ‘bad sectors’. Didn’t bother to continue running it more than a minute or so.
Is there anything I can do to make these drives useable?
There is nothing that I want off of these drives. I would like to be able to reuse them but not as paper-weights.
