can you have a synology NAS with a directory and access it using both SMB and AFS depending on the client used? For an office with half windows work stations and half Macs could access the same files using native protocols.
Yes, in a way. M$ OS's do not have the ability to translate anything but SMB. So any share must be SMB which all other OS's can handle. I still use an AFP share but it's just for Time Machine.
Apple OS can handle SMB just fine so for basic file sharing it's fine for both OS's. I usually do AFP only if the site is only Apple or for Time Machine. On a Synology your just specifying the translation layer to the destination.
