Naming workgroup or domain computers

Does anyone have a naming standard that they go by when setting up workgroups or domains? I'm tired of seeing peoples names or random generated junk that are meaning less so I'm trying to come up with something more useful.

I am not sure I get what you are asking? What do we name our PCs or Servers? In my home network I gave all my PCs fun names from the Megaman game series. Here at the office I use a system of 3 letter for city/state 2 letters for OS 4 letters for department then a number 000-255.

I use for my home / biz network something that it easy to remember and is expandable (nuklear detonations names such as Trinity, FatMan, Little Boy, Mike, Ivy,...).

For a biz though... I would name things [department][type of pc][number]

like... salesserv001 or acctpc001

Normally what I do is go by [deptartment][phone extension]

For example, for a sales deptartment that was 5 computers, with 5 phone extensions from 100-105 I would do:

sales100
sales101
sales102
etc.......

This way it is easy to tell exactly where the computer is, just goto the phone extension. I also try to put the IP addres's within the same format, really helps streamline everything for me, that or I just over do things

sales100 - 192.168.1.100
sales101 - 192.168.1.101

I use the client's internet domain name as the internal domain but .local or .lan (depending on if there are Macs on the network) and I use approximately the same PC naming scheme as vontreigo...
Acct-001, sales-001

Or if it is the owner of the company I do something like...
Smith-Desktop or Smith-Laptop

Server names are almost always acronyms for the company...
California Mechanical Systems = CMS

If it's a lot of PCs I'll name it after it's location. Sometimes this can come back to bite you in the ass when the computer is moved though.

#######=service tag (we primarily buy dells)

I like vontreigo and MHCG's ideas and will use something similar. I also like ProTech Supports idea but some stations don't have phones and I don't use static ip's. Once again thanks for the suggestions.
