My first Squatter!

www.iRecoverData.com is MY business name - someone, called Jeff, has taken up iRecoverData.net !

I chose not to register all forms of the website for the cost/ridiculousnous off it all, however, here we are. This guy doesn't even have a phone number to contact him. I just sent a message through their contact form, asking to explain himself, and if he's doing it intentionally.

The way I found out about it was by receiving emails from magicprints.com for HIS business cards, he said his email address was jeff@irecoverdata.com -- They were sample prints...

If this has happened to someone else, what did you do/what was the outcome?

Cheap? The domain i wanted was $20,000 from a domain service that would rather pay the $10 a year to hold onto it than sell it.

I added all them up when looking to buy, pricing is yearly, and adds up for crap that doesn't seem to do anything. Especially with the new extensions that came out. Just seems to be a joke rip-off from those in charge of domains/registration.

Someone registers domain names that they feel someone else would like to own/purchase (so they make a huge profit). Often, through searches and crawlers, they find "similar" domain names to existing ones.

As a side-bar, in all actuality, though irritating, is this a real problem? I mean, I only do (though am open to the world) local work.

Looking at doing a trademark, not sure it'd be worth the $300 or so. Yeah, then I could say get lost, change the name, but then what? It's not like he's next door. My wife wants me to crush him but I'm not sure it's worth it.

1) MANY businesses have the same name - in my tiny country there are 17 businesses with the same name as mine. You're in the States so many more I suppose

2) It's only squatting if you hold a trademark on irecoverdata

As a side-bar, in all actuality, though irritating, is this a real problem?

It is nice to be able to own all suffixes and similar names to your actual domain. Suffix in particular...so you can do forwarding....so more people find you. Say something thinks they know your domain..but have the suffix wrong. They point their browser to yourdomain.net instead of yourdomain.com Wouldn't it be nice to get them to land on your actual site? Same with e-mail.

Sure... a shared last name with a fictional character's alias... Totally fake! And if not fake, lame that his parents had the name probably before the show.




Seriously, I don't see the problem here. You didn't register the domain, he did...cost of the domain doesn't matter. It's very unlikely to hurt your local business. It's not like you having the .com makes him unable to have the .net by any means...and he's free to do business, too..

SO...really...why does this matter, again?

So you are getting his email at .com. He is not getting his email nor his business cards because they probably set them up with the wrong email id. His future "customers" will be contacting you since they will type ".com" instead of .net. Hmm. so he will be generating business for you.
