Hey Guys,

I am just starting out and I want to offer mobile payment options so my customers can pay me right after the job is done. I already have a paypal account setup with the debit card and so I am using Paypal Here to do the Mobile Payment Processing. The problem I see with this is EMV. October 1st was the deadline and so now I could be responsible for fraud because I am not using a EMV chip reader. Paypal charges $149 for their EMV reader with a $100 credit if I do $3k in processing in the first 3 months. I doubt I will do that.
  1. What are you guys doing for EMV processing?
  2. What are the chances of fraud? What have you guys seen in your businesses?
  3. Is it worth $149?
Thanks for the input!!

Thanks GhostDog, I am familiar with Square. I didn't realize they were taking on the liability....decisions, decisions...

Check with your bank too.

Our bank provided us a mobile card reader for about $10/month and charges less than Square and other providers.

Tap, Chip and Pin and swipe capable.

An important question to ask yourself is this. Are you willing to wait a day or two before you get your money? If they are just paying for a labor only job that's one thing. If you have to special order parts for a job, you might find yourself having to front the money to pay for the part, or wait until the square drops the money in your account.

I use PayPal here because I special order all my hardware as I need it (Except for a few common parts). Adding a day or two to those jobs probably wouldn't make clients very happy.

My understanding about the fraud is it only matters on lost/stolen cards for EMV - not just regular chargebacks.

Not many people steal a wallet and then use a stolen credit card to have a virus removed.

You never know what someone is going to use a stolen card on.

And, you never know when someone uses their card and then claims it was stolen after the fact.

I have a PP link on my web-site, just fill in the Info, card number and bingo, works great on the road. Not as fast as a swipe, but you save on the reader fee.

We use QB online and its included mobile device. Rates are good enough compared to square. Functionality is the same and it goes straight into the accounting system.

Now I find this thread.......

We use Flint. No dongle, better rates, no fees and a responsive company. (Uses your camera and OCR). Too many horror stories of tied up moneys with Square.

BTW - Flint says they are unaffected by the whole EMV thing because they are software based, not hardware. See-

And (as discussed above) using the camera gives proof the owner and the credit card were together.
