Got a laptop in here that has an issue with a broadband dongle.

the 3 network went down and when it came back up the customers laptop still reported that it was down.
so they bought a new dongle and same issue.

It is installed but in device manager the dongle is showing as device failed to initialise (code 39)

I can see it as a usb device, and the computer knows it is plugged in as it fires up the 3connect software.

I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling ut that doesnt work.
I have plugged it into the workshop machine and it just installs itself automatically.
workshop ad customers laptop running windows 7 64 bit.

What causes code 39 ?

a side note, i plugged in one of our usb mice on usb port1 and it worked fine, but when i moved the dongle over and tried to instal usb mouse on usb port 2 it failed (started looking for windows update and never got any further so I cancelled it)

Which model dongle?

There are two fixes that I know of for this.
1) Uninstall the 3 software, dongle drivers etc.
2) Clean the registry with a good registry cleaner to remove all keys associated with above
3) reboot and re-install

If this doesn't work use the Upper and Lower Filters fix for optical drives (the dongle uses a virtual CD-rOM to install) and then go through the above steps again.

This has never failed for us and we do probably 3 of these every week.

Sweet will remember that for the future

uninstalling the device did not work.
uninstalling the "3 connect" software did not work
plugging to another usb port did not work
removing upper and lower filters for optical drive did not work.

I noticed SP1 wasn't installed so whilst that was installing I had a quick look in programs and features and noticed that there was an entry for the drivers in there, I removed those and the "3 connect" software again and this time it installed fine when I went to reinstall it.

How much do you charge for this repair out of interest ?

€30 - that's our minimum bench fee and covers anything up to 30 mins.

I should have been clearer in my answer i.e. that there is (for the huaweis anyway) almost always an add/remove entry for the dongle drivers.
