Hey all,

I keep getting this error message from Microsoft word 2010 saying
(word could not create the work file. check the temp environment variable)

I've tried using steps from a Microsoft article on how to fix the problem through the registry but its useless. Every time I start word or open a document in word the message pops up.

Any ideas on a fix? Thanks In advance.

Did Office ever work properly on this machine?
Or is this a new problem and Office was running fine before? If the latter...what may have changed on the machine? I've seen this issue before...the userprofiles temp internet files path gets out of whack.

yes office work perfect before, so its a new problem that I notice. I edit the registry following a Microsoft article but the problem persist.

Test on a different user profile. If the new profile does not have an issue, rebuild the old profile or find out which key or folder that office is storing the corrupted data in and rename to the *.old and retest.

Many times the program can be fine, but the app data and current user registry key may have issues.

MS Word creates temporary work file. If you getting this error, most likely you don't have access to where the temp folder / work file is being created. The work file is normally the same folder where the file is located. This setting is hard coded in Microsoft Word and I don't think it can be change.

If your creating a new document then check the permission where the new files is suppose to be created. This is under file > Option > Save > Default File Location

If your opening an email attachment or using a browser, then the temp folder is different. Check the Email setting and browser settings
