Microsoft Defender for Windows is getting a massive overhaul

No real surprise there, but it's a welcome development.

Microsoft has made it clear that their involvement with security products for the home user has been becoming more and more serious. There was a time when most of the Microsoft built-ins related to security were considered toys, at best. That ended with the advent of Windows 8, and even more so once Windows 10 came out and Windows Security hit the streets.

Defender, as part of Windows Security under Win10, has consistently rated in the top 10 products that the various security labs test for years now. And, yes, I know those tests are not perfect, by any means, but they're the best generic metric, when taken collectively, that I know of for most of us to make an attempt at evaluating how these products perform "in the real world." They're way better than random guesses based on one's own product loyalties.

This is basically a streamlined Defender Advanced dashboard bolted into a personal account. Not a bad thing... especially with Windows 11 requiring that Microsoft account ownership to keep Bitlocker under control this will be a welcome addition for SMBs everywhere.
