Microsoft admits error, after some Windows 7/8.1 PCs began Windows 10 upgrade automatically

"In the recent Windows update, this option was checked as default; this was a mistake and we are removing the check."

This was there for a while and was still checked as of 2 days ago. MS knew exactly what it was doing. If you did a manual Windows update you automatically downloaded and installed Win 10 if that check was there and it was because they put it there. I have seen it checked on every machine I worked on in the past week.

And everyone thought the users were crazy when they said "I didn't tell it to upgrade to Win 10..."

lol.

But seriously, if someone just said yes, install updates when windows prompted them to, they would be upgraded without really realizing it.

Win10 has been a default-checked update for many weeks; I have been manually unchecking for at least several weeks...

Just ran into one today that had the check mark for win10 as a update item. I did uncheck it for the client but was thinking that was pretty odd.

I've been approached by several folks who say that they thought that W10 was "just another update". In most cases it was either too late to roll back. Definitely, MS knew what they were doing. This allowed them to say "W10 is installed on NN million computers".

Absolutely they knew what they were doing. Taking no chances on any Windows 7/8 computer that I touch that the client prefers not to upgrade. GWX Control Panel to the rescue.

In another thread I posted after using that tool, windows said, "installing windows 10". It didn't, however. Still showing installing 10 when manually performing updates.

I have unchecked them and gone back the next day and seen them re-checked. I don't know if they will do that from now on, but I know it was happening up until a few days ago. I'm going to check the next few that come in.

Yes, and they've accepted all the defaults on first run – sharing updates to the Internet, sharing Wi-Fi passwords ...

Wouldnt it be scary if you started seeing this 'update' on servers?

This explains a lot. I got a couple of calls about that this week. I thought you'd have to click on let's do it now or similar, and there was a link to dismiss it/do it later, so I thought to myself , "sure, like you didn't install mapsgalaxy and ask toolbar either." I have just apologized to them (under my breath).

I saw this on a tech news site last week. Looked on my own machine - it's checked. According to the update log, it's been trying to upgrade for the last two weeks. Luckily it's been failing. I manually upgraded my laptop in August and I like it and hate it in equal measures but I don't think it's ready/stable enough to install on my main PC.

And if you read all the links the end user does get several prompts. So yes it is like most malware that end users stupidly install.

I've seen this happen too. I've also hidden the update and had it reappear.

A few months back on patch Tuesday there was a box checked under Recommended Updates, I unchecked it and then hid the update, next patch Tuesday it was back and checked again.
I believe that MS is scared to death that people are happy with Win7 and they don't want another repeat of XP (God forbid they build a nice product that their customers enjoy). However, they really seem to be out of touch since the launch/failure of Win8. Arrogant, heavy-handed behavior will not win them new customers.
