[WARNING] Major Data Breach reported at Equifax

Screenshot_5.png When I visited the site to check to see if my personal info was included in the breach, I had to enter in my last name and last 6 of my social. After pressing "next" I was informed that I had been enrolled in credit monitoring. I was never even given a "yes, your info was included in the breach" or "would you like to sign up for credit monitoring?". That being said, I seriously doubt that by (involuntarily) signing up for the credit monitoring will actually void my right to sue them in a court of law. In fact, the New York Attorney General had a few things to say...

Looks like they've removed the bit that includes the waiver.
September 8, 2017

We understand that some consumers are experiencing difficulties getting the answers and support they need through our website and call center. Ramping up the website and call center to handle the anticipated volume is ongoing and we are focused on making improvements as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this process has created.

Thus far today, we’ve made the following adjustments:

1). YOU CAN DETERMINE YOUR STATUS IMMEDIATELY
Some consumers who visited the website soon after its launch failed to receive confirmation clarifying whether or not they were potentially impacted. That issue is now resolved, and we encourage those consumers to revisit the site to receive a response that clarifies their status.

2). NO WAIVER OF RIGHTS FOR THIS CYBER SECURITY INCIDENT
In response to consumer inquiries, we have made it clear that the arbitration clause and class action waiver included in the Equifax and TrustedID Premier terms of use does not apply to this cybersecurity incident.

3). EXPANDED OUR CALL CENTER
We have tripled our call center team to over 2000 agents and continue to add agents.

Our goal is to make this process as convenient and consistent as possible. We will continue to identify steps to improve this process.

And we will continue as well to listen to your comments and suggestions.

What are you guys doing about this personally? Looks like my info was had, so wondering if I should close and reopen my accounts.

If mine had been reported as being leaked and I did not already have a service I'd sign up for their free one year. Given that the breach has only been public for 1 day, despite Equifax having discovered it on July 29, 2017, the poo-storm is just beginning.

They already have their own monitoring service in place so it's a no-brainer that the marginal cost to implement this is nothing compared to what other entities have had to pay. Equifax is just sandbagging so I'd not be surprised if the coverage time increases significantly in the near future.

Would not do any good. It's not your account information they have access too. Your credit report doesn't grant access to your money. Only your identification. They have access to social security numbers. With that someone can create new accounts and run up bills.

As I understand this all the data is just your credit report. Which I already can get on any one of you by requesting it. My running a credit report on you doesn't give me access to your bank accounts. I can with effort take that info and forge your ID but at least you would have a record that the credit was checked. I can still forge your ID without doing a credit check but that would take more foot work on my part. But it also would be more undercover. Credit checks are reported ON your credit profile. In fact, if you get too many of them it can have a negative effect on your credit rating(you seem to creditors as desperate for cash)

For the time being, I am going to use the credit monitoring that they are offering. Aside from consulting a lawyer in regards to arbitration, I don't see that there's much else I can do.
