Machine shuts off after 1/2 a second

Typically a machine will shut off immediately if the cpu does not acknowledge the power good signal from the supply because of improper regulation etc. Obvious this board has issues which led to something getting cooked. I would bet the power supply is still good, not so sure about the cpu and memory etc at this point though.

Did you get beyond the video problems with it and this is a new problem? or are things just getting worse?

Beyond what the others have said and without looking into this any further. You could have toasted the CPU by not seating the heatsink correctly or something when you put it back together. That would explain a still working motherboard light but no post.

I have also seen machines power up then quickly shutdown when the 4 pin P4 connector isnt plugged in properly. I have also seen plugs getting hot and burning when they arent making proper contact such as this.

Again, without seeing the computer and spending time really researching this for you, I am just guessing at the moment.
