No sound also tried head phones same thing she said when it was restarted it works but now it does not work
I tried to do O/S update got message below she must have some family sharing
I think its hardware related as it used to work after a reboot

Its says no device in sound properties

I'd try booting from a Linux distro to test audio. That ID error is what happens when the machine is signed out of the original ID, signed in with a new ID that has no OS downloads attached. Also flash PRAM and SMC reset.

He could also try to boot from an external OSX and see if the sound works, but if headphones don't work also...

Thanks, Will do all of the above

I have a couple of similar model laptops I don't use, could I swap H/d without Apple giving me security errors, it's onsite so have to go back
That's if it turns out to be a hardware problem

As long as the macOS version on the HD is compatible with the MacBook, you should not get any errors, and as long as the MacBook has had the macos version on the hd installed previously (sometimes if they don’t have the firmware updates you could get a error on no hard disk found )

I think I've seen this before, there is a chip that controls audio and it can go bad. Also, no audio can be caused by liquid damage, you can't see it just by looking, as some of the components may be behind plastic covers such as WiFi board etc. But they are directly in the path of water arriving from the keyboard/hinge area.

Check the audio daughterboard (if it has one). I had a customer with a similar issue and i just reseated the cables for the audio board and it worked again. I cant remember what model that was

Picked up Mac it's a 2013 Macbook Air with SSD
I rebooted sound is working but not sure for how long it has El Capitan I am planning to clone it then TM backup
and install newer O/S from the cloud.
I was hoping to try with a different drive then I would not have nuke original if its a hardware problem I think SSD is not removable

I have had little success installing from USB as it gave me endless runaround, too difficult getting media

Monitored it for 3 days sound worked at all times flashed PRAM and SCM
I think she left it on for weeks with not restarting. I took it back told her to restart once a week like a Windows
