Mac speed up and general tune up

I have had a few macs but want to know best procedures you all might have into making system run faster - apart from hardware. Have one here that was redirecting to other numerous other advertising sites.

So far have normally done the following -

• Force Quit any open apps
  
• Run CCLeaner
• Verified and repaired HDD permissions and HDD health checkin disk utility
  
• Checked proccesses for high loaded apps
• Removed addons and managed search engines in all browsers

What else can I do in regards to MAC systems, sorry MAC O/S are not my real forte.

I have heard of Onyx being a recommended gadget, but I try to avoid working on Macs if poss, so I'm not going to go as far as endorsing it myself - others may have more experience of it.

My normal process for just a tune-up includes
Start in Safe Mode . Gets rid of some cruft and makes things a bit smoother.

Restart from external drive and rebuild directory using Disk Warrior or similar tool.

Create a new User and move data and files. Check the start up programs.

Quick scan with Malwarebytes to clean the browsers.

Never used CCleaner for Mac, so I can't comment on it. Never cared for it on Windows. Onyx doesn't seem to do much for me.

Curious why you create a new user and move data for a tune up? Are user profile issues common enough that this is a regular procedure?

Normally I do not bother with creating a new user account unless things are really bad. Malwarebytes and DW are both awesome tools. If there are complaints about specific programs I usually clear out the .plist files associated with them by adding on .old. On some apps deleting the .plist causes the program to loose access to stored data.

Creating a new profile just leaves behind any nagging little problems or leftovers. It's a simple thing to do and makes enough of a difference that it is worthwhile. The same is true, to a lesser extent, on Windows, IMO.

If you have a Mac that just is a bit slow, a safe mode boot, reboot, and a new user is a quick fix.

And adding an SSD doesn't hurt.
