Got in an old HP box that ran for 10 minutes then crashed hard, no bsod, just died.

Would reboot ok, then do the same thing again.

Mobo caps looked bad, so I swapped out the M2n68-LA mobo and cpu for a known good
M2n68-Am Plus \ Athlon X2. Kept original Bestec 250W PS.

Mobo Power light on but no cpu fan, no boot.

Swapped out PS for working Bestec 300w from another HP-- Same thing.

Swapped out PS for shop Enermax 500w-- Boots fine.

Anyone know if these Bestecs check for a sensor unique to HP (ASUS) mobos before they power up?

Did you try the old motherboard with the Enermax? Unless it's a recent development I doubt that HP has chipped their desktop power supplies to only work on HP firmware. I can say that if you get it booting with the non-HP motherboard you'll most likely have problems.
