It seems NVME drives are getting to be more commonplace in machines now, particularly thin and light laptops.

I have found a USB adapter on Amazon which is about £40, are their any cheaper options out there yet that I am overlooking ?

the MSATA versions are around £10, seems quite a big difference in price.

Newegg has this one for $22, but don't know if they will ship to UK. I'm still using a PCIe card model, but I'm a little wary of it ever since I bought a second one and it went up in smoke in the middle of a data backup. Incredibly, it didn't damage the client's drive. I don't think it's the kind of thing where you want to find the cheapest one.
