Its a Garner Hard Drive Degausser, for anyone who has never seen one (I hadnt either). When you turn it on, it creates a strong magnetic field that erases everything on the hard drive, including the mainboard.

Pretty sweet, now I can get my hard drive destruction business going.

I wouldnt think it would "erase" the mainboard , though it does render the drive useless as it erases the factory servo tracks. Even Garner themselves says nothing about erasing the board

How much did that set you back? Certainly quicker than my method of manually breaking the drive apart piece by piece!

Find it for a good price? Been wanting to get one of those to speed up our process of tossing HDDs....but they're exorbitantly expensive...and we just go through drives of our business clients as courtesy.

Large hammer. Small hole punch.

less than 30 secs per drive.

Platter shatters when punch is driven through chassis.

Problem solved. :)

True....but noisy as heck, and beats the heck out of the surface of the work benches.

On the other end of the professional center building we're in..there's a company that is a repair garage for school buses. I've seen a huge drill press in their bay...been wondering if they'd allow us to spend some time on that now 'n then with a box of HDDs.

When US Navy ships come into port they go through a Degaussing range to keep from electrocuting the line handlers on the pier when they touch the wet mooring lines.Ships have a large static charge built up from being at sea and it needs to be discharged. I have been on board many times while going through it and I can still get it up. (l0l)

I got it for free :)

I wonder about the health effects too. A partner and i are starting a data destruction company. we also got a bad ass grinder, about the size of a monster truck tire.

Nice score!

As far as a drill press on a HDD, you can't go too fast or the drill bit overheats. (or you can liquid cool...)

I wore out a bit after less than 5 hdds. I used a similar bit from the same set to drill out spot welds on a car, well over 40 spots, still nice and sharp so it was not the bits...

Thats all the brass and silver in it.

Was it a carbide tipped bit?

Its not whether u can get it up, its whether your firing blanks :)

But i do have alot of old hdds to get rid of, im thinking maybe modify a hydrolic press with a plate and 4 spikes , will take a while to do a box of old drives but at least its physically destroyed.

I did some work once at an army base and their IT guy had a shredder for HDDs. Looked expensive though

So....how close does it have to be to the hard drive? you think it could go through a thin apartment floor?

MUHAHAHAHAHA...kidding I live in a house but that would be awesome!

Edit: Oh you have to put the drive inside?

Not on this one. It does say anyone wearing metal needs to stay back 5 feet
