I have a computer in, that the customer forgot his windows password, so i thought okay nice little job, cleared the password and still cant log on, safe mode does not work as well, so had a search on Google for the error message, and it seems the problem is related to a server issue, it is a HP desktop with XP Professional.

THIS IS THE MESSAGE

The system cant log you on due to the following errors
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted
Please try again or consult you system admin.

there does not seem to be a fix but thought i would ask on here if anybody know how to fix this, might have to go a nuke and pave.

If the Pc part of a domain the administrator has to reset the password. Also at the windows logon on screen make sure you are trying to logon to the PC not the domain.
If you cleared the password chances it was the local PC password, not what is used to login to the domain.

under the username and password there should be a drop down box that probably has the domain name, the other choice should be "PC NAME (this computer)" try logging into that.

Tried logging to the admin account, same message, there is no drop down menu, his is under Home. the PC is not part of a domain so not sure why it is doing this, could be a virus problem.

login

You could also use one of the the Linux/UBCD basaed password changers to create a new account with administrative privleges, then login to that account and clear the domain problem....

I ran into this before. When I saw it it had something to do with Novell Netware client being installed under the network connection properties.
