I was at a party on Christmas Eve and I was talking to a friend of the family who runs his own medical practice. He was telling me about the nightmare of dealing with his IT support firm and how there is no way to understand what they are doing because when he starts to question what is being done, the techies start hiding behind technical jargon and using the "IT language" as a shield. It looks like I am going to get some consulting work out of this as I am going to look over his setup and see if things are being done properly. (If they aren't would it be a conflict of interest for me to put a bid in to do the work properly?)

The doctor asked me if there was any state of federal licensing or certification needed to practice IT. I told him none that I knew of but there may be some requirements for someone who is working for the Fed gov or State gov.

I'm trying to figure out what other occupations need some types of official licensing or certification to practice trade. I'll start a list and if anyone can add to this it would be greatly appreciated.

Locksmiths (no criminal record)
Doctors
Laywers
Legal Assistants
Paralegals
Nurses
Judges
plumbers??
electricians
Surgeons
Anathesiologists
Pharmacists

The reason I want to know what occupations require licensing or certifications is I want to compare them to specific jobs within the IT field.

So, does anyone have any others to add?

California has the Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair which I think is a joke. Its basically just a tax that they collect from people doing any kind of electronic work. I just went to there website and it seams they have added home furnishings and insulation to the list. There is absolutely no testing involved, its just a form and a tax.

Your state's dept of professional regulation should have a list of what professions are required to be licensed by the state.

a short list for IL:
Barbers
Accountants
Realtors
Appraisers
Auctioneers.

the list is huge. Lots of the professions on the list have multiple entries for Healthcare & financial sectors.

Funeral Directors

I have to enter more characters, so I will also mention that this is in Indiana.
