List Of Things I've Learned While Becoming A Computer Repair Professional

Facebook is an extremely powerful tool for getting on the 1st page.

Really? Show me some results on that please, I'm very interested in hearing your analytics because I have yet to find any search words from my years of facebooking get me on page 1 of any search engines. From what I know, Facebook is not searchable, Linkedin is just getting in the game.

Do tell please, I'm very curious! :D

Goes right back to everyone on this forum being a know it all. All facebook pages are crawled by Google. Facebook gets crawled far more frequently than the average site. My facebook page gets crawled nearly every day or every other day. Many of the top searches are on yelp, thumbtack, craigslist, and Facebook. Infact one of the ranking metrics of a facebook page are likes. Your facebook page name even serves as a page title, another thing in which Google factors in when ranking pages.

Also: When I get the chance I will screenshot and upload facebook pages that are ranked on the first page for relevant keywords and terms.

My popcorn is running low, anyone got a top up? ;)

Btw, while this ^^ is a flippant comment, I genuinely am liking this thread, there is lots of different opinions and it is actually quite interesting looking at everyones different points of view.
My conclusions so far: If it works for you, continue to do what you're doing...

I see something a little different. I see narcissism and a few people that struggle to come to terms with the fact that there are things that they don't understand. Instead of "my facebook page doesn't rank for search terms, so you must be wrong"... the more logical response would be "mine doesn't rank on page 1, but I wonder if it's possible? If so, how can I get mine on page 1?" Skepticism is ok and is completely expected, but many of the posts here are bordering on a refusal to see outside their scope of understanding.

Ok good to know. I'm trying that trick. I checked out what you put in and will test it on mine.

Here is my official new test for Facebook

"computer repair rochester mn"

I did a search and I found a facebook with this...

"Rochester PC Computer Repair", he was on page 2

So now I have a challenge, I updated my FB page.

For you, "computer repair columbia, sc". You're on page 1 with Facebook here.

I just thought becuase of the nofollow thing that it would rank. Learn something new all the time. This is why i come here

Im not entirely sure how it works, but I know for a fact that Facebook is ranking on page 1 for many terms.

My facebook isnt ranked on page 1 for "computer repair columbia, sc" on my laptop. But on your end, it is. I wonder why that is..?

Edit: I think whats happening is that although my facebook page doesnt hold as much weight locally it does on a larger scale. Since Facebook is ranked worldwide it pokes through when those out of state or maybe even out of the country search for it. Which would make it a VERY powerful tool for ranking nationally or maybe even internationally. If that makes sense.

well Rex, the one thing I learned in my SEO addiction from Oct-Dec is that it's never figured out. You simply have to just play the game, try your best and focus on other things as well. The ONLY thing I have ever seen get me on Page 1of Google immediately is a well constructed Blog Title in WordPress.

Page 1 for "computer repair columbia, sc." Mind you, this is after running "incognito" in Chrome. So my search is in no way personalized and no cookies are being used.

Getting page 1 for a location keyword of an area with a population of 130,000 is not any spectacular feat of SEO mastery. Its simple maths that in an area of low competition just having any presence on the Web will get you rank.

Thats is pretty much what happened here.

If you were in a city with a population of a million or more, I would be sitting up and taking notice because with those numbers you would have stiff competition vying for the top slots, all using real seo methodology and putting in a lot of work to stay competitive in rank.

But that aint the case, buddy.

Yeah stick with what works for you. Im glad you have had success!!. :) Just try to keep it in perspective, eh?

Speaking of SEO, one thing I've been struggling with is gaining legitimate backlinks. It's a little easier with a blog, but a computer repair site.. not so much. Do people really share links to pc repair sites?

Getting backlinks requires a ton of work. You have to write articles and publish them on other sites. Once you have a few good articles as a reference you can start trying to become a guest blogger on popular blogs. The backlinks you gain from the articles will help your website rank and a good article will help your author rank.

I used to run an article directory and learned all kinds of stuff about article marketing. Some people think it is dead, but it is here to stay. There is a wrong way and a right way. I could talk about article marketing all day, but I don't have that much time to spare.

I have about 100 or so backlnks, not sure how that works with the SEO, but I know that blogs certainly do rank fast.

I had a new social media client join up 2 weeks ago and we did a blog for her, perfect SEO and in 10 minutes she was on page 1. She never ranked before at all. Blog blog blog, I swear it's the juice.

In no specific order, feel free to add if you'd like.

1.) Low prices doesn't necessarily lead to clients.
2.) People are willing to spend more money then they know. (Yes.. THEY)
3.) If it takes you more then 5 minutes to do, you should be getting paid for it
4.) Be prepared to mess up; time and time again. (before getting it right)
5.) Most people don't really care about free services. They expect to pay, you should capitalize on that. "Free" services actually turn people off.
6.) Aside from the landing page clients will visit probably 1 or 2 other pages. Make it count!
7.) PPC is the best way of discovering what keyword work and don't. Even if you use it for a few days or a week. It's great.
8.) Anyone who promises you overnight SEO results ranking is usually lying.
9.) Think as a customer.. not as a tech when pricing your services.
10.) Facebook is an extremely powerful tool for getting on the 1st page.
11.) Google Analytics is your best friend. Use it wisely.
12.) Webmaster tools is your best friend. Use it wisely. (Especially when you need your site indexed)
13.) You can now link your website as an annotation in Youtube videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrJ0_-LUQ8o
14.) Treat every job like your life defends on it's success. They sometimes lead to much bigger jobs.
15.) Don't be afraid to take something to a competitor if your not equipped to fix it. (i.e. televisions, speakers, etc) Clients don't care how and where you did it.
16.) Be honest.
17.) Keep it simple, short, and to the point. Most don't care how smart you think you are. Unless they ask, keep the jargon to yourself.

There's alot more, but I think I've covered the most important ones.
I agree with all of them part from 5 and 6. In my experience since I offer free health check in my shop, Iv got more potential customers walking in and I would say almost no time wasters. regarding no 6; I check all my 24 websites ( all sites first page in Google and other major search engines covering 2 cities first 1 position and 22 towns first position over 200 first position important keywords in Google alone) regularly with analytics, most visitors stays in my landing page since first 5 seconds crucial to turn them to customer I placed all my important bullet points to my home pages and it works great! almost forgot.. and contact us page :)
