I I have always messed around with linux but never completely liked it until I tried linux Mint!!!! This OS will blow most other OS's out of the water! I had Ubuntu installed on my laptop but it didn't recognize my wifi card and I didnt like ubuntu's GUI as well. When I installed linux Mint everything just worked! my WIFI, memory card reader, sound, etc.. JUST WORKED! I love all the effects too! It also has a start menu with search similar to Vista or 7. If you have never tried linux Mint I suggest you at least give it a try :) I have it dual-booting on my windows 7 laptop and will only use windows 7 when I need to run something that isnt linux or wine compatible.

I found out that it is based on ubuntu but I personally like it way better than ubuntu. I am writing this post on google chrome for linux which works very awesome! Mint also comes with wine so I can run some windows programs fine.

i've got an old pentium 4 laptop (gericom) that just isn't happy with Vista nor Win 7 - xp works fine but it takes far too long to boot up regardless of how i've tried to rectify it.

i was very disappointed to find Win 7 didn't have compatible drivers whereas Mint worked right out of the box - or did after a couple of quick automatic updates.

so, overall, i think Mint is very impressive. it's what i'd recommend to any novice wanting to try Linux (if they are Windows savvy).

i agree that it beats Ubuntu. it's a shame that there isn't more of a push for Mint as i think it has the potential to make your average user feel comfortable moving away from Windows.

if you've an old machine that just doesn't seem quick enough to bother using anymore; just stick Mint on it and you'll probably be pleasantly surprised by how nifty things are again.

Was very impressed with my live cd bootup of Linux Mint.

In a nutshell, it just works. May discuss installing it on customer's computers that have spyware/virus issues in Windows. They could always boot to Windows to run Windows programs, but use the Linux Mint install for the majority of their surfing. We'll see.

I am currently running Mint 8 on this desktop. It's really nice, everything works straight up and it looks quite good out of the box (except for maybe the drab grey default mint-menu). Can't fault it myself, it's a very solid release. I find Google Chrome makes browsing in Linux a lot better, Firefox is horribly slow for some reason.

I had the pleasure to speak with some of the developers online. They say their goal is to make it (a) VERY fast and (b) just work. I think they did a great job.

* Don't forget that you can change the look of mint by getting thousands of new themes online. I use cillop-go for my buttons! Because I like the super clean clear glass look. For my windows theme I use clearlooks with a cherry on top. :) So my mint looks sharp. :)

I think I turned Bryce onto Mint as well. But as you have all said, anybody that uses Mint will never go back to ubuntu...

WOW! I installed the trial of CodeWeavers on Mint and installed Office 2007! It works awesome! It runs at least a good as on Windows 7. The only thing I havent got figured out yet is how to access my windows network from linux.

Awesome! If I remember rightly it even lets you play games...

Does anyone use Ubuntu or Mint (I wil be testing Mint out) and use an accounting/CRM/work orders type of software for your business?

I have started using Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, however, I do not like running multiple OS's and having to deal with multiple machines so I would like to to use an equivalent app like quickbooks for Ubuntu or Mint free if possible. Yes, I know I can use a VM, but I rather not how to go that route.

Thank you

I just want to second the notion that Linux Mint is awesome! I am using it right now and so far it is the best full desktop Linux OS I have used. I have a fairly older machine and everything was recognized out of the box. Very nice OS.

I use Ubuntu, but I also like Mint. In terms of user-friendliness, I think Mint probably has the edge but they're both very well-rounded distros.

Linux initiation

Hello,

I've recently been using a Linux tool called Puppy Linux, and I'm hooked. I never gave Linux much more than a casual trial here and there, but now, I'd like to find out the best way to gain knowledge and understanding of the Linux OS.

Any suggestions as to what is the best starter package for newbies? There are so many versions around today, and new offshoots pop up frequently. I just want to find out the best way to get my feet wet with this OS

Thanks in advance,

Do any of you use this, partnered with something like Avast for Linux, as their virus cleaning machine?

Only problem I've had with Linux so far is Firefox.

It comes installed with Flash, Shockwave and Java etc.. But I can't play Poker on Facebook. I can play other games fine, just not Poker. And when I am playing a flash game, and hover over a button, the cursor flickers between the hand and the pointer over and over again; very annoying lol.

Thinkin' about switchin' to Chrome (thinkin' bout it across all platforms to, considering that it wasn't hacked at the PWN20WN comp this year)

Happy Easter to all,

Methical
