Hi all,

This is my first post,so I will do it with my best,Thank you .As the title says it all,Do you own a laptop or a desktop, or both? Which do you prefer and why?

At the moment I have two desktops, I don't need a laptop at the moment as I don't have the need to have a mobile machine, but in the past I have owned two laptops, a ThinkPad A31 and then a ThinkPad R40. I've owned around 15 desktops in my 14 year life (yes they come and go very quickly!) and I tend to own multiple desktop machines at the same time like I do now. I tend to prefer desktops because I like having the power and a large screen, 24" in my case.

What do you own?

I noticed your intro didn't refer to your status as a tech or soon to be tech. This questions just raises a flag as this site isnt for end users. Most of the people on here here will own many because of their business. I.e i own a business desktop, bench desktop, MacBook, laptop and netbook for mobile work and 2 other desktops when I get around to setting them up for workshop tasks.

1 out of 3 laptops fail in the first 3 years. They are made to fail, not mention that they are slower. If you don't need portability then case closed. Get a desktop.

Yes. Another fact I changed my main computer from my Macbook to a bulky desktop for the main reason if there was a break in then the laptops will be stolen before a desktop. :)

Both....a couple of desktops and towards at home
A tower at the office
A laptop..14" Lenovo Thinkpad
An Asus 10" notebook

I mostly use my laptop for my work, although often I'm remoted into my office workstation (using Windows MESH)

As my work requires me to be onsite at my clients offices to work on their servers and workstations and other things on their network....portability is a must.

I'm very rough on my laptops...they get tossed around, bumped around hard. I often ride my motorcycle to clients onsites and the laptop will be in the saddlebags or rear mini luggage rack of my Harley...certainly a rough environment. I'm a firm believer in business grade laptops and the Thinkpad series are certain at the top of that list...very durable. I've had them going back to the T21. I seem to get about 3 or so years out of them...and that's under very abusive use. Lots of my clients have them also, as well as other brands of businsess grade laptops such as Dell Latitudes. So I disagree that laptops are made to fail (as a user noted above). People that believe that probably only deal with cheaper sub 700 dollar home grade laptops.

As for performance...they can go toe to toe with desktops. So long as you're not cheap and you didn't purchase budget ones. Most people skimp on them as far as hard drive spindle speed...and get cheaper models that have a 5,400rpm or even 4,200rpm hard drive. Well if you get 7,200rpm models (now you're equal to desktops)...adequate RAM, they'll go toe to toe with desktops. The i5 laptop I'm typing from now runs like greased lightening. My prior Thinkpad T60P with it's C2D processor ran like greased lightening.

If I need portability I use a Laptop, a netbook or an android phone.

At the desk I use a desktop.

I wouldnt use a desktop if I needed to be on the move.

I wouldnt use a laptop for anything that could be done on a desktop and that didnt require mobility.

Hello Everyone,

I mostly use a desktop. I run a amd 6 core with 8 gigs ram and have virtualbox/win7 on it. I do have a laptop thats a lenovo budget model. Works fine and I dual boot Ubuntu and win7 on it.

I think both a desktop and a laptop have there uses. However, I dont think a laptop can ever take the place of a good desktop. But I guess that depends on what all you are doing with them. For me, I enjoy the power of a 6core system and a good video card. My main reason though is that laptops are not really a "always on" solution. But that is personal opinion. However, Doing remote work is best of course with a laptop when servicing onsite.

One of each is great. Your prepared for onsite repair and can also do things in the shop.

I would go with a lenovo though. They are rock solid.

coffee:)

I own 2 Dell laptops and a Macbook air, and I hate to use them , I use them on the road only. Screen to small, to much scrolling, not a full keyboard, hate to use the fn key, the keyboard is to far from the edge ( all true on the Mac is less a problem, it's more thin) and most important, they are not as responsive as a desktop

I have

4 Laptops

2 Netbooks

5 Desktops

That are mine. 4 of the desktops are shop machines. The netbooks are my travel machines. Laptops are just sitting there. Well all but one. lol

I don't have a desktop anymore.
I have a server for file storage and 2 laptops.
one laptop is plugged into a monitor and sits on my desk full time.
the other is a 17" vostro that I carry around.

I will probably get a new desktop this year or next though. I feel the need to have 4 screens.

exactly jim.... i dont think i could say it better myself

I have 5 desktops and 3 laptops. I almost never use a laptop my wife will some. I use my phone if I'm out and use desktops the rest of the time.

I own more desktops and laptops than I care to admit to... and I seem to collect monitors also.

To keep my laptops running at a decent speed I remove the 4200, 5400 and 7200 class hard drives and install SSD's. Used to have a 640GB laptop drive a while back but I really don't need to store movies on a laptop drive... that's what our 10TB NAS unit is for, so a 120Gb SSD is usually enough.

When I get bored with a laptop I pass it on to a family member.

I have both desktop and laptop. I use my desktop for gaming and I use my laptop for browsing the internet and for work.
I use my laptop more than my desktop because I can carry my laptop anywhere I want to in my house.
