Will a Sony 17" wide screen display work in any other laptop with a 17" wide screen display?

I know very little about screen interchangeability, be gentle with me :)

The short answer is: Maybe.

Laptop LCD screens aren't specific to the model or the manufacturer. The panel itself may be used in several different other laptops, but without the model of the lcd or laptop we can't tell you any more.
Lots of lcd panels are interchangable/compatible with each other, too, so if the model's not exactly right it may still work.

Yes. Speaking generally, almost all laptop screens are interchangeable. The newer the laptop the more interchangeable the screen. The part number on the screen is the key to finding what laptops it works with. It's usually quite easy to find out what screen is required for a particualar laptop not so easy in reverse.

great. maybe u all can help. what about a dell inspiron e1501 lcd working with a dell inspiron e1505?

There is no "E1501" :D The 1501 model is an E1505 without all of the extra features, so dell took the "E"(for entertainment) off of the model number.

To answer the question, though.. Yes, it's essentially the exact same laptop, without a few features, so the screens are interchangable.
