Ok I'll start from the beginning. I have a laptop that would boot but come to a black screen with no mouse. So I ran a repair from the CD; thing is once it starts trying to copy the files it can't find the CD drive. I said ok I just had one in that did that and just had to use a external USB drive. That didnt work. I also noticed that the mouse wouldnt move when on that setup stage of the repair. So I took out the HD and did a manual restore of the registry hives from a week and a half ago. Well it boots up fine and comes to the log on screen but the mouse (by mouse I mean touchpad) or keyboard wont work. I plug a USB keyboard and mouse in and still nothing. The light on the bottom of the mouse comes on but nothing.

Any ideas on what to do?

I also tryed to boot from the external USB and it wouldnt work so I tryed updating the BIOS but that didnt help any.

I also tryed copying any usb*.sys files from stystem32\drivers folder form a good computer into the latop and that didnt help. I also copyed the *.sys file from the Dell\drivers folder for the touchpad into the system32\drivers folder and that didnt help

Have you tried something like UBCD to see if that works? also, how long did you wait with the light on the bottom of the mouse? I have seen some machines take 5-10 to finally load up the proper drivers for external mice, mostly older machines.

The keyboard works fine until windows loads. I did boot using a BartPE CD and it worked in there and I remember now accessing my thumb drive. I was wondering if the USB ports worked at all but now that I remember that I guess they do.

Yea the laptop sat over night with the USB mouse and keyboard in.

I had this problem, the cursor would show in the screen, but wouldn't move, the USB keyboard didn't work either, however, they did work in safemode, I wouldn't bother wasting time fiddling with it, back up their stuff and format, that's what I did.

This a dell by chance? Was going to say, you could reload all the drivers with their Driver Reset tool. Otherwise, you could spend days chasing down possibilities. Its not a connection/hardware issue or it wouldn't work at all, even on PE. JW's suggestion may be the quickest solution short of a definitive error of some sort that would pinpoint the affected drivers/files. Could try System Restore to roll back to a previous date..... might not work though, depends on the actual issue.

Yes it is a Dell. But how am I going to run the reset tool if I can't use a mouse or keyboard?

Well if I haven't figured anything out by lunch I'll back it up and reload.

Typical Dell issue for all Dells which don't have PS/2 connections anymore.
You will either need the original keyboard/mouse that came with the computer, or find a similar kb/mouse using the same driver.
The USB driver loads late, so often hardware recognition (eg screen) will block the usb driver install. As you don't have a working kb/mouse usually it's fun time.

This is a laptop so there is no kb/mouse that came with it.
I know the problem your talking about but I have a USB KVM that always loads fine when I have that problem but it won't work on this laptop.

I had this great idea of trying to RDC into the laptop and trying to control it even found software that will allow you to remotely turn on the connection. Of course though I think the drivers for the nic arnt installed or something cause the light wont turn green on the back I scanned for all IPs and only my work computer showed up.
