It gets worse...

Both are viable alternatives, but each have caveats.

The AMD route sounds like the best way to avoid win 10, but, as stated in the article, MS is nibbling at both ends...hardware and lifecycle: "Windows 7 is already getting put on a nil-by-mouth diet: it gets “security, reliability, and compatibility”. Given MS's recent habits of giving the public what MS wants them to have (integrity and customer needs/wants/opinion be damned), don't be surprised to see the win 7 life-cycle plan shortened, probably in spoon-fed fashion (MS wants everyone to have win 10, and have it they will, like it or not!). They say it's all in the best interest of everyone. I say MS should change their name to Mustapha Mond in the interest of transparency. And who is to say that AMD may not be sucked into the plot as well (one way or another)?

I realize my contributions to this thread sound a bit like a paranoid rant, and, admittedly, my authority issues do come into play, but I'm not sure how one can view MS' actions as anything other than an invasive attempt at inverted totalitarianism

As to Linux, good alternative (the best, in light of reality), but still a step down in terms of compatibility and usability. But one can get used to that. The real problem for me is that I've kept my personal and business books in Qkn & QB for decades, and there really is no Linux alternative for that. The previously discussed VM may be the answer to that, but there may be hindrances to that as well. If the world is being force-fed Win 10, the banks may well stop support for win 7 altogether. I suppose that then one could run a win 10 VM. That may actually be viable. Or perhaps someone may develop an application that actually rivals QB.

Microsoft backtracks on Windows 7 & 8.1 support deadline

Just saw this this morning...

Thanks for posting that. An interesting development and I'm glad to see it. Unfortunately, it would take a lot more than back-pedaling on a previously reneged upon road plan that actually gives back less than it took in the process for MS to regain my trust. They had my utmost trust prior to win 8 and lost it completely with the win 10 push. Now I doubt the veracity of any decision they make simply because of the underhanded way they've handled win 10.
