Is yelp any good for computer businesses?

Personally, it's not worth it. I don't pay for a listing but I was the first to come up if someone hit the deals option. 6+ months and only 1 referral from their site.

One thing to consider nightkingdoms is that Austin may have a bigger Yelp following than Arizona (depending where you are in AZ).

tropicz, we get a good amount of clients from Yelp and always have (we're in LA). The advertising aspect of Yelp is mainly a rip off, but it can help you stand out (especially if you don't have many ratings, or less than 4-5 stars).

We've been doing Yelp advertising with one of our business pages for the last ~8 months, partly because they agreed to let us keep up on older business listing with 70+ reviews (and 120+ "filtered" but "real" reviews, good ol' yelp). The difference in pageviews is NOT significant, therefore it's probably NOT worth the cost. Google Adwords are MUCH better IMO. Especially if you start tracking conversions with Adwords.

I'm in Phoenix (1.46 million vs. 0.82 Austin), but I get what you're saying. Yelp along with many other localization-type apps don't really have much of a following here yet. The people that search on their phones will use Yelp but usually most people just use the app that came with their phone whether that be Siri or Google Voice Search. If they're on a desktop it's just google/yahoo/bing. Yelp's good for finding places to eat, but not much else here that a Google search can't come up with more.

Yea, I've never been to Austin, but with SXSW there, it seems like it may be a "Yelp Friendly" community :)

Also, since you mention Siri, I believe she should be using Yelp data now (with the new OS). In fact, I just tested it, and she does! And luckily the top three listing are for me (makes sense, since it's location based) :)

It's interesting that if you ask Siri for "computer repair" she'll give the names of computer repair shops like mine. But, if you ask for Mac repair, only official Apple Stores :( And "data recovery" gives results for "document handling services" :(
