I received a call today from a client concerning some Gmail accounts. It seems as if they have bought out their partners. Apparently their partners deleted some files and Gmail accounts that belonged to the company. She asked if it was possible to recover the Gmail accounts. I explained I had no experience with this and would reach out for some info on it. She is prepared to hire an attorney or do what ever it takes.

Has anyone had any experience in this matter and what was the process?

Are these paid accounts or free ones? If they are free ones they are probably SOL, another example of you get what you pay for. If they were paid, like through a Google Business account then there may be some hope. Personally I'd advise them to get their lawyer to file a lawsuit on their behalf. Complete with discovery and a restraining order preventing the former partners from doing anything else. You might be able to do a forensic recover on their equipment to recover emails.

Do you have access to a machine that used to have the accounts?

Talking to Google might be tough but have you tried?

I have been asked this in the past too and Google Apps for business only allows you to recover a deleted user account for three days, after that it is gone forever.

Yes but they do have archival backups because Google has been subpoenaed before to turn over email accounts in lawsuits. If this is a bad partnership break up then as @markverhyden states they may have to send in the lawyers to get this straightened out.

I have not talked with Google yet. Wanted to see what was the best route to take. I will call them in the morning and see what they say. The lawyer part has already started but I'm not involved with that yet.
