Is ForensIT still the best way to migrate profile to new DC?

ETA- when you say new DC do you mean completely new Active Directory? If same AD then SIDS and profiles will not change.

Yes, new DC Server even though the naming convention will be the same, the profiles will still get mucked up ..

I'm sure you know this but ... you can migrate to a new DC while maintaining the AD structure. It's a lot less work.

Used Fabs 6000 times before I tried ForensIT. Whoa. ForensIT is amazing and fast. Yes, fabs all the way for migrating from one machine to another, but ForensIT is much better for migrating profiles on the same machine.

ForensIT does not really migrate profiles, but rather re-maps them. Keep that in mind for those used to fabs

First time I ran ForensIT I thought it had crashed or failed. Couldn't believe it was done in 2 seconds. Then it occurred to me to check the registry. The profiles were re-mapped beautifully - very simple and elegant. And 0 issues encountered.

Just migrated 20 machines to a small linux DC and the process was smooth as silk.

Works awesome, only supports Server 2008 R2 Schema though, so not great as a secondary DC.

Yes - so far we haven't hit any limitations, but I suspect that switching back to a Windows 2012+ Server down the road will be fraught with all sorts of complications like this: https://www.technibble.com/forums/threads/zentyal-svr2012r2-migration.70687/

Zentyal is neat and it works... but it wasn't my choice.

I suspect many small businesses could use Zentyal just fine to replace their aging SBS2008 systems and break the Microsoft lock-in.

Zentyal is supposed to help for an easy set up of Samba AD, but I found it super buggy and frustrating (because the UI was so buggy). If you don't need any of the other Zentyal features, my recommendation is just to learn how to setup Samba AD using the CLI, then you get familiar with the CLI tools, which I think is important because there are no GUI for the tools in Zentyal.

We use ForensIT for all server migrations. Sometimes it takes 2 seconds and sometimes a few minutes. The profile "bending" is strange and mapped drives/printers might have to be removed manually if they existed in the previous profile, but it works well.
