Is a website still worth it?

I have been contemplating on building a website for my business but started to wonder if it's worth spending the money. Is social media a better medium to promote my business? I am part of no less then ten local community Facebook pages and folks constantly promote their offerings and can interact directly with potential customers. Is a Facebook page a better way to go? Your thoughts?

Yes. Of course. To me and many other professionals, someone with only a facebook presence is not a company I would rely on. Its the same amount of effort a pizza tech on craigslist would put into his web presence. Can you even google your company name and find the real result?

Facebook is ok for residential work, but for business clients, I don't think you will get much with just facebook. Also, the first thing most people do after hearing about a company is check out their website. Definitely worth it.

Thanks for the advice, I will most likely spring up a Facebook page while I find someone to work on a professional site.

Really? "Is a website still worth it?" On your list of priorities a good website should be far above Facebook or other social media. IIRC some here have had some success in those areas, but that seems to be less today than a few years ago.

When I search for any old thing, particularly business/services, Facebook pages hardly come up in results at all. When I hear others talk about some great vendor, store, plumber, electrician, restaurant, etc . . . "I first heard about them on Facebook!" is never uttered.

Perhaps my general prejudice against social media (I'm not a social guy) shines through. But really a better question would be, "After I create a great website, would it be worth it to create a Facebook page too?"

Perhaps I see more value in social media since I have sold more goods and services via that medium than anything else but that's just me. I will continue to ride that wave until it no longer produces but I do agree with the rest of you that a website is still a must. A company logo to build my identity will have to come first then the website. Thanks for helping me see the light!

You're kidding me, right? Asking a computer technician if a website is necessary is like asking a baker if an oven is necessary. Social media should be used to bring traffic to your website. You should also use Google and other CPC ad networks to drive traffic to your website. The purpose of your website is to get calls and emails.

Let me put it to you this way. Let's say you're on Facebook. That's all fine and dandy, but there are a lot of distractions on Facebook. My goal is to get people from Facebook onto my website ASAP. The sooner they visit my website, the sooner they'll know how to contact me and there will be no other distractions on my website.

And I don't know about you, but if I saw a company on Facebook that I wanted to try, the first thing I'd do is look for their website. If I couldn't find it on Facebook itself, I'd Google it. If it didn't come up on Google, then I'd assume that it was either a scam or the person offering those services didn't know what they heck they were doing. I mean, who doesn't have a website these days? It's not 1995 anymore. Even a basic horrible website is better than no website at all.

We are constantly asking clients to use the button on our website to connect us to their PC, and we do get sales enquiries through our website, moreso after registering the company Goolgle/maps

If this business not important to you or you don't care to grow and have a successful company, then you don't need a website.
Are website is used to take one time payments, establish a support connection along with the standard information on our company and products.
After getting a proper website, look into getting Yelp reviews and I'm not talking about advertising on Yelp.
I will ignore any company who doesn't have a web presence and if so, they don't keep it up to date.
If you create a website or have one created please make sure it is grammatically correct. Some of us hate to see misspellings and lack proper punctuation. And as an old fart, I don't think very highly of those who don't understand that "me and Robert" is not proper English... it's "Robert and I".

you need a domain/email/website, 75% of my business comes from it. The other 25% comes from cards that I leave everywhere I go and people that I meet.
I have companies from other provinces that will find me to service national accounts here in my city.
BTW Facebook got me no business so far.

Definately worth it. You don't need to spend a load of money getting it designed, just bash something out yourself using a wordpress template, until you are in the position to get something professional put in place.
I do not get much direct work from mine at all. Maybe one contact form a week. But it is there ready.

My main source of work is from an editorial I do in the local free paper, that and word of mouth of course.

Facebook does bring me in business, all residential, which is my main focus.

This forum is awesome, I have spent the last six hours reading and doing research and it has lit a new fire under my butt. I do have a steady stream of residential and business customers but only a handful are on a monthly maintenance plan. I have a full time job as a Network Admin for a large organization so my business has always been a part time thing, regardless of the job I have always been able to give my clients top notch support. My RMM tool of choice gives me the ability to automate many tasks and I can reach any customers remotely if they need assistance. Currently I am a one man team but have a pool a professionals, telecom, Cisco Telephony, WAN and VMware specialists that I can call upon in a pinch if a job gets too big for me or is beyond my expertise. My goal this year is to sign up 3-5 new business clients, my issue has always been converting customers to monthly maintenance plans so that will be my focus. I already have my domain name, next steps are a logo and webpage.

I wonder if the business that you want to have website is a local business or not? But in regards with your question if social media i a good/better medium to promote business? Yes it those with this you can have lot of potential costumers for your business like this top 3 social media FB, Twitter, G+. Also having this social media can make your business reliable for the customer's.

RexPowell, most of my customers are very local and are confined to two counties. Keeping my geographical area small gives me the ability to respond to onsite calls faster and is more manageable given my business consists of one person.

Already started to build my page and will post it here for some feedback when complete. Hopefully it's not too terrible!

Another vote for TechSiteBuilder, I don't use it myself but I just helped a tech with SEO using Matt's TSB and in one week he's already ranking on page 1 for many keywords. Some are on page 3, but we are working on that :)
