Internet Explorer error

I am getting an Internet explorer error ven when IE is not running.

"Internet Explorer encountered an arror and needs to close"

When I am running IE and get the error it usually doesn't close the window I am using. I use webroot spy sweeper and have contacted them, and they said they couldn't find a problem with any virus or adware. I have also run Adaware, and spybot. I tried removing IE and reinstalling it, but doesn't help either since removing it obviously doesn't take it off the machine totally.

Any help?

Hi,

We need some additional information to help you.

What OS and service pack are u running?
What version of IE are u running if XP?
Are u sure the error message says: "internet explorer" or does it say "explorer" only?
Since when did u get that specific error message? has it always been there or did it occur after a driver upgrade or software/hardware installation?
Did u double check that IE isn't running using taskmanager or better process explorer from sysinternals?

ie7 (have uninstalled and reinstalled)

Yes it is IE (internet explorer encountered a problem and needs to close)

I have been getting it for a couple months now, didn't notice it with any update or anything.

I have checked taskmanger periodicly when not running IE and didn't see it running.


I think it is a virus or some adware or something of the sort trying to launch a popup or something, but maybe some of my security has it blocked from working but not removed. As I said webrot can't find a problem and niether did adaware or spybot.

If u still suspect malware u can download and run "hijackthis" from trendmicro and post the log here so we can see what is running on your system.

A better alternative for spybot and ad-aware is "malwarebytes anti-malware"
U can run it and post the results.

keep in mind that running multiple anti-malware apps can cause system instability. Do check for that.

make also sure that your system is full patched with the latest updates especially the updates for IE7.

I'll look for these and try them. I don't let adaware and spybot run all the time i just use them for scans. The only real time protection I use is the Spysweeper with antivirus from webroot.

It may not be malware, but why else would this be happening? It is almost like something is trying to create a popup.

Run another HiJackThis and check the box for

Other than that, looks pretty good to me. Run malwarebytes anti-malware just in case.

never run firefox, but like I said this error occurs even with IE not running. if i switched browsers i'd still get the error because ie would still be installed.

I am still getting the error, I'll run mbam scan tonight and post results in the morning.

Do you have your windows installation disc? Unless somebody comes up with something by the end of the day, try doing a non-destructive windows repair install. This will replace damaged/missing windows files with ones on your disc.

I'll give it a look, I didn't know u could do that. I did a search and am reading how now.

Ran it. Now my video card won't work right and it remover sp2 and sp3, now they won't reinstall. I have more problems than before.

Guess it's time to wipe and start over. Thanks for trying.

If the IE error went away, just download the video card driver and SP3 rather than wiping.
